Alex Hales given leave by Notts due to 'personal reasons'

Nottinghamshire say “no timetable has been set for his return” after Alex Hales pulled out of their opening Royal London Cup game

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Apr-2019England batsman Alex Hales missed Nottinghamshire’s opening Royal London Cup fixture for personal reasons, with the club saying “no timetable has been set for his return”.Hales was named in England’s preliminary World Cup squad earlier this week and has been a consistently destructive force over the last four years – although he has recently found himself in the role of batting back-up, with Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow establishing a partnership at the top of the order.England’s one-day players are set to meet up for a training camp next week, ahead of ODIs against Ireland and Pakistan. Their World Cup campaign starts on May 30 against South Africa.”Alex Hales has made himself unavailable for selection for personal reasons and no timetable has been set for his return to action,” Nottinghamshire said in a statement on their website.Hales has a white-ball only contract at Notts, and has not played this season. His most recent cricket came at the Pakistan Super League in March.Speaking earlier this month, Hales reflected on his role in the Bristol night out in 2017 that led to Ben Stokes’ arrest, before looking forward to England’s attempts to lift the World Cup for the first time.”It’s probably the most excited I’ve ever been in pre-season,” he said. “It’s arguably the biggest summer ever for England with a home World Cup. We are heading in as the bookies’ favourite. Hopefully I can play the part in a memorable summer.”In Hales’ absence, Notts had no trouble racking up the runs, totaling 417 for 7 before managing to hold off Lancashire in a match that saw 823 runs scored in total.

Rohan Mustafa returned figures of 5 for 26 to help United Arab Emirates bowl Netherlands out for 176, a score that was comfortably chased down on the back of Chirag Suri’s patient 78, off 126 balls. The result pushed UAE to third in Group A, behind Ireland and West Indies. Netherlands have two losses in two matches.Netherlands made a strong start after choosing to bat in Harare. Wesley Barresi and Max O’Dowd added a 52-run opening stand in 64 balls, before the team lost its way, losing four wickets for 30 runs. Ryan ten Doeschate’s steady hand (34 off 60 balls) and cameos from Scott Edwards (27) and Pieter Seelaar (20) carried Netherlands to 176. Offspinner Mustafa dominated proceedings for UAE with an economical five-for and instigating a run-out.Mustafa couldn’t replicate his heroics with the bat, falling for 11 in the fourth over of the chase. UAE were put back on track with a 57-run second-wicket stand between Suri and wicketkeeper Ghulam Shabber (27). Three wickets in quick succession, though, gave Netherlands a chance. But Suri and Muhammad Usman snuffed out any hope they had with an unbeaten 93-run partnership.

Lehmann bristles at Howard's 'reinvention' call

Australia coach Darren Lehmann said that the team did not need any more members added to the support staff, to aid the spinners, saying that they have often used spin consultants for Asian tours

Daniel Brettig28-Nov-2016Australia’s coach Darren Lehmann bristled at suggestions that he or his support staff needed further change or “reinvention” following a drought-breaking victory over South Africa in Adelaide, at the same time revealing how much pressure he has been under in recent weeks.Lehmann did not enjoy being told through the press by team performance manager Pat Howard that he needed to “reinvent” himself as a coach following the recent run of five consecutive defeats, a streak that also coincided with the release of an autobiographical book, , which outlines his philosophies.”I was going to wear a suit to the press conference,” Lehmann quipped when asked about Howard’s words. “I didn’t. I chose not to.”Lehmann was also unhappy to be quizzed on the role of spin coach John Davison, who has a strong working relationship with the team’s No. 1 spin bowler Nathan Lyon but is only seen sporadically on tour with him. Australia is a rare case of an international team not having a full-time spin coach, not only to work with spin bowlers but also to hone the part-time skills of batsmen who bowl spin. After a recent dry spell, Lyon bowled beautifully in Adelaide with the benefit of Davison’s presence, and he has historically tended to perform at his best when his trusted mentor is nearby. However, Lehmann said he did not want to add to the number of support staff already with the team, and argued that other consultants had been used for Asian tours.”So you want another staff member on tour?” Lehmann replied to a question about Davison. “A lot of people say it’s a question of numbers. John’s obviously got other roles as well, so he has been working with Nathan throughout the preparation phase of all Test matches. So he has been around, just Adelaide he stayed around.”I would have thought we’ve had Murali [Muttiah Muralitharan] and had Sri [Sridharan Sriram], so we’ve had a couple around the place. Davo’s come around on tours. When we’re away, we normally take one. I don’t think we haven’t taken one to the subcontinent.”Lehmann admitted that Lyon had responded well to criticism he had faced from both outside the team and within. “I’m just pleased for the players. The players have copped a lot over the last few weeks and they’ve responded really well,” he said. “Obviously, a change of players as well. You feel sad for the blokes who missed out in this Test match, but the guys who came in did a really good job. Steve [Smith] summed it up – a new young group going forward, really pleased for them.”Overall, [Usman] Khawaja was outstanding in the first innings. He put away his cover drive and really summed up conditions well. They all did their job. It was great to see Nathan Lyon, who has copped a lot from everyone – including us, I suppose, as staff and selectors. He really did a great job for us this game as well.”Public pressure on Lehmann and the selectors was underlined by his assertion that Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood will play in the ODI series against New Zealand that now takes place before the Pakistan Tests. “We get in trouble if we don’t play them,” he said. “Not sure about that [resting them]. But they’re going to play. At some stage.”We gave them a break, didn’t we? So they should get through the summer. But we got in trouble for that as well. You’re damned if you do, damned if you don’t. The simple fact is day-night Test match, day off, helps us in the three one-dayers. So they should be fine there.”Then, it’s a day-night Test match in Brisbane, so they should be right to get through the summer and it’s a pretty important summer as we know, it’s very important. They led our attack really well and stood up for us.”They’ve just got to be really fit and fresh, as much as you possibly can. There’s so much cricket all year round. Do you learn your lesson along the way? You do. But, as long as they’re fresh and going okay, there’s no problems playing them. But the advantage we had in them not going to South Africa as such is that Hazlewood’s fresh as a daisy. He’s going really well. And bowled probably the best he has bowled in the last couple of summers, I thought, in this series.”

New Zealand Women thrashed Sri Lanka Women by 10 wickets by bowling them out for 126 and then chasing the score rather easily in under 15 overs, in the second ODI in Lincoln. New Zealand captain Suzie Bates impressed with an all-round performance that included figures of 3 for 27 from her ten overs and an unbeaten and aggressive knock of 70 from 44 balls, to help her team to a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.Put in to bat, Sri Lanka were rocked early, being 4 for 2 in the third over, and dented further in the 12th over in which Bates struck twice. They were revived briefly by two stands that featured top-scorer Chamari Polgampola (35) – of 31 runs for the fifth wicket with Dilani Manodara (31) and 36 runs with Sripali Weerakkody for the sixth wicket. However, Bates came back to break the sixth-wicket partnership and Sri Lanka lost their next four wickets for 22 runs to be bowled out in 46.5 overs. Medium-pacer Sophie Devine finished with figures of 10-2-17-2, that included her 50th ODI wicket. The hosts were hardly bothered in their chase. Rachel Priest continued her fine form from the first ODI, and scored an unbeaten 51 off 43 balls that included nine fours. Bates’ fifty, on the other hand, included 13 fours and a six as the hosts whittled down the target by scoring at nearly nine runs per over. The win takes them to third place in the ICC Women’s Championship, behind Australia and West Indies.

Hogan late fruition aids Glamorgan

Three years ago, Glamorgan would not have taken a second look at Michael Hogan as they planned their overseas signings for another county season. He was 27, supposedly approaching his peak, but was just another fast bowler struggling to make the grade.

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Mar-2012Three years ago, Glamorgan would not have taken a second look at Michael Hogan as they planned their overseas signings for another county season. He was 27, supposedly approaching his peak, but was just another fast bowler struggling to make the grade, a fast bowler approaching his late twenties without much prospect of a first-class career. How quickly times have changed. Hogan, at 30, has belatedly established himself as the leader of Western Australia’s attack and has made such a mark that he has been named in the Australian Cricketers’ Association four-day all-stars team. Add the attraction of a British passport and Glamorgan’s success in securing him on a three-year deal has become one of the most intriguing signings of the county season.Hogan, who will join Glamorgan in July and concentrate primarily on championship cricket, was recommended by his captain, Marcus North, whose own arrival this season will be delayed because of a finger injury and the fact that his wife is in the late stages of pregnancy.Glamorgan Cricket’s head of elite performance, Matthew Mott, said: “We are delighted to have secured Michael’s services for at least the next 3 seasons. He is at a great age for us to get him and I think he has got five or six good years of county cricket in him. It is a fantastic time to sign him as he is one of the form bowlers in Australian cricket.”He is predominantly going to be a four day bowler and you can never have too many fast bowlers. His presence will enable us to share the workload at the back end of the season as well as allowing our very talented young bowlers time to develop. Playing alongside a fresh, mature and established first class bowler will help them as they seek to progress to the next level.”An unexpected phone call from Tom Moody, then Western Australia’s coach, during Australia’s close season three years ago turned around Hogan’s career. He had never played first-class cricket and had shuttled between Sydney grade cricket and seasons spent in his home town of Newcastle, playing for New South Wales Country.

Ramprakash extends Surrey contract

Mark Ramprakash has extended his playing deal at Surrey County Cricket Club until the end of the 2012 season

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Mar-2011Mark Ramprakash has extended his playing deal at Surrey County Cricket Club until the end of the 2012 season. Ramprakash, who will now be 43 by the time the deal expires, has scored 15,030 first-class runs for Surrey at an average of 74.40, including 60 of his 113 first-class centuries.Although he is currently rehabilitating following a cruciate knee ligament injury suffered whilst playing football in November last year, Ramprakash expects to be back playing by late May.During the 2008 season, Ramprakash became the 25th cricketer to reach 100 first-class centuries, notching 106 not out against Yorkshire at Headingley. Since then, he has recorded a further 13 hundreds, a tally that puts him just one below the great Sir Vivian Richards and he only requires five more to surpass Sir Donald Bradman.”I am still enjoying my cricket, maintaining my fitness and am still able to score runs for Surrey, so extending my contract was a very simple decision for me,” said Ramprakash.”Under Chris Adams and Rory Hamilton-Brown, Surrey has a very exciting young side who I feel have the capability to win trophies over the next two years. Helping them achieve their potential will be both enjoyable and rewarding and I look forward to playing my full part over the next two years at the Kia Oval.”Surrey Professional Cricket Manager Chris Adams added: “Mark Ramprakash is the finest domestic batsman of his generation and still has a huge amount to offer Surrey County Cricket Club.”To have a man with his ability, experience and energy in your dressing room is simply something that cannot be bought and I look forward to continue working with him for the next two seasons.”

Cricinfo previews the IPL match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kings XI Punjab at the Chinnaswamy Stadium

Match facts

Tuesday, March 16
Start time 1600 (1030GMT)Kings XI Punjab will be happy with Irfan Pathan’s trouble-free return from injury•Associated Press

Big Picture

This is a match-up between two teams who haven’t been quick off the blocks. Kings XI Punjab’s trio of big-name batsmen – Yuvraj Singh, Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene – flopped against a strong Delhi Daredevils, and Royal Challengers Bangalore went down without much of a fight at a festive Eden Gardens. One thing Bangalore need is someone to fill in the role Ross Taylor did: an explosive batsman who can clear the boundary at will. Eoin Morgan, with his wide repertoire of strokes, could be the one on whom the burden of getting the quick runs falls. Another worry for them is the continued ineffectiveness of Dale Steyn, perhaps the world’s best Test bowler, in the Twenty20 format. While the batsmen didn’t do their job against Kolkata, the ease with which Manoj Tiwary and Brad Hodge dismantled the bowling should concern Anil Kumble.Punjab fans looking for a bright spot in their defeat against Delhi will be happy with the new-ball bowling, particularly Sreesanth who nipped out the dangerous pair of Virender Sehwag and Tillakaratne Dilshan early. Also encouraging is the trouble-free return from injury of key allrounder Irfan Pathan.

Team talk

Bangalore’s ploy of opening with Sreevats Goswami didn’t work, and he had a horror time behind the stumps, which could result in Mark Boucher being picked. If they make that change, Steyn could be the one to sit out, with one of Vinay Kumar or Abhimanyu Mithun included instead. With Piyush Chawla being Punjab’s first-choice spinner and Yuvraj likely to chip in with his left-armers, Ramesh Powar’s place could come under the scanner. Mohammad Kaif also had a poor game, and Punjab might look to replace him as well.

Head to head

Punjab 3 Bangalore 1
Punjab strolled to two comprehensive wins in the first season – by nine wickets at home, and six wickets at the Chinnaswamy. The teams split the matches last year – Bopara powering Punjab to a seven-wicket victory in Durban, before Bangalore scraped home by 8 runs at the same venue.

In the spotlight

Yuvraj Singh’s first innings in more than six weeks included the strange sight (for a Twenty20 match) of a batsman leaving three deliveries in a row. He lasted only two more balls before holing out to mid-on. A side that is light on Indian batting talent needs him to fire to reduce the load on the overseas batsmen in the side.Bangalore’s young batsmen Much faith has been placed on the likes of Manish Pandey and Virat Kohli, but their failure on Sunday cost Bangalore. They need to step up their game if Bangalore are to put up a better show at the Chinnaswamy.

Prime Numbers

  • Irfan is the second highest wicket-taker in the IPL, with 33 scalps.
  • Piyush Chalwa has the unwanted record of having made the most ducks in the IPL – five.

Kohli on his two-month break from cricket: 'A surreal experience not to be recognised'

“Just the ability to be together, the connections that you make with your older child, it’s amazing.”

Moody: Kohli showed all his gears

Virat Kohli, after his match-winning 77 against Punjab Kings at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, opened up about his two-month break when his wife Anushka Sharma gave birth to their second child. Kohli missed India’s home Test series against England as he and his family spent time away from the country.”We were not in the country. We were at a place where people were not recognising us. Just time together as a family, just to feel normal for two months,” Kohli said at the post-match presentation ceremony. “For me, for us as a family, it was a surreal experience.”Of course, having two kids, things become totally different from a family perspective. So just the ability to be together, the connections that you make with your older child, it’s amazing.”I mean, I couldn’t have been more grateful to God for the opportunity that I got to spend time with my family.”Kohli spoke about how he enjoyed not being treated like a celebrity.”And yeah, just the place that we were in, I was telling the guys that when we came back, the voices back home felt that much louder,” he said. “I couldn’t look up because I was just not used to being called my name for two months. And then immediately you hear these loud noises and then you’re back in it all again.”But it was beautiful. It’s an amazing experience to just be another person on the road and not be recognised and just carry on about life that normally people would on a daily basis,” he said.Kohli also spoke about the love he gets from the RCB fans, especially in Bengaluru, having played for the franchise since the inception of the IPL.”It’s been going on for years and you know, people talk about a lot of other things when you play sport. The achievements, the stats, the numbers. Look at the end of the day when you look back you’re not going to think of the numbers and the stats. It’s the memories that you create,” Kohli said, before citing the Indian team head coach Rahul Dravid. “Famously Rahul in the change room nowadays says exactly the same to us. When you play, you play your heart out because you’re going to miss these times when you’re with your friends in the change room playing in front of fans.”So the relationship that’s happened organically over so many years it’s something that I can never ever forget. Just the love and the appreciation and the backing I’ve received for so many years that’s been amazing.”Kohli, however, knows that he has to make changes to his game to keep up with the ever-evolving nature of T20 cricket.”Well I mean you have to [make additions to your game],” he said while speaking about stepping out to fast bowlers and hitting them over cover, as opposed to playing the grounded cover drive that he is so famous for.”People know I play the cover drive pretty well so they’re not going to allow me to hit gaps and with guys like KG [Kagiso Rabada] and Arshdeep [Singh] as well, he’s tall. So, I mean, if they’re hitting length, you have to create some momentum in the ball.”And once you’re closer to the ball, you kind of negate the bounce that’s going to happen. You meet it earlier.”So, I mean, you have to come up with a game plan here and there and try to keep improving your game,” Kohli said, before issuing a friendly reminder.”I know my name is nowadays quite attached to just promoting the game in many parts of the world when it comes to T20 cricket. But, I’ve still got it, I guess.”

The opener finished unbeaten on 160 while Marcus Stoinis made a return to first-class cricket

AAP10-Feb-2023A career-best innings from Daniel Drew lifted Sheffield Shield outsiders South Australia to a strong position against runaway leaders Western Australia after the opening day at Adelaide Oval.Drew remained unbeaten on 160, having posted a second first-class century in eight outings and eclipsing his previous best of 130 in the process.Entering the fray in the 10th over following Jake Carder’s dismissal for 6, Drew looked comfortable throughout, finding the boundary on 18 occasions during a 272-ball knock. In concert with opener Henry Hunt, Drew featured in the best partnership of the day, leaving the Redbacks sitting pretty at 1 for 171 during the middle session.WA medium-fast bowler Charlie Stobo led the way on a tough day in the field for the visitors, returning 2 for 40 from 20 overs.Jake Lehmann contributed a typically breezy 26 before being caught down the leg side, while Thomas Kelly added 39 before he was dismissed late in the day.Western Australia went into the match with two high-profile inclusions in the form of Marcus Stoinis – playing his first red-ball state match for nearly three years – as well as veteran batter Shaun Marsh for the first time this season.South Australia, in contrast, were without their Test stars Travis Head and Alex Carey, while paceman David Grant (stress fracture) and long-term opener Jake Weatherald (personal) were also absent.Holders WA boast four wins from six starts while SA only broke through for their first victory of the season in the final match prior to the mid-summer break.
