'The most disrespected striker the USMNT has had' – Herculez Gomez says Ricardo Pepi must build on Champions League showing for PSV

Former U.S. striker Herculez Gomez believes Ricardo Pepi’s goal and assist in PSV Eindhoven’s 6-2 Champions League win over Napoli should spark a consistent run, urging the forward to keep pushing for a place with both club and country. Pepi has had inconsistent playing time this season due to injury, scoring two goals in six Eredivisie appearances.

Getty Images Sport'He has to make an impact'

Gomez noted that with minutes limited as he returns from injury, Pepi must make every opportunity count – pressing, moving, and finishing decisively to convince manager Peter Bosz he deserves more playing time.

“Ricardo Pepi’s problem is that when he’s on the field, he has to make an impact," Gomez said on the podcast. "He’s got to ask question of players so Peter Boscz says, ‘OK, I have to get him on the field now because he is fit now’.

“And if Peter Boscz is getting him on the field and he is fit, he is putting the ball in the back of the net. He’s proven it for every club he’s been to…and with the USMNT. When he comes off the bench, when he starts that’s who he has been.”

AdvertisementCompetition for places

Gomez highlighted the competitive reality awaiting Pepi under USMNT coach Mauricio Pochettino, with forwards like Folarin Balogun and Haji Wright producing strong club form.

“If you’re Ricardo Pepi, that’s who you need to continue to be,” Gomez said. “Whatever you need to do to get the eye of Mauricio Pochettino because in this time, he’s got a shiny new toy in Folarin Balogun. In this time, Haji Wright is scoring goals. This is Ricardo Pepi, he’s probably the most disrespected striker the USMNT has had in the last four or five years.

“Because he scores goals, because he’s there for multiple coaches and something always happens, something always happens. Gregg Berhalter doesn’t take him to the World Cup, he gets injured with this coach, he comes back from injury and scores a few goals, he leaves for the national team for quite some time, doesn’t come back. Now he has got an opportunity, there are other players performing, [but] it’s well within his reach and well within his power.”

GettyPepi’s development at PSV

The 22-year-old has struggled for minutes while regaining fitness, yet he’s produced three goals in 363 minutes across nine matches, including two contributions in as many Champions League outings.

Aston Villa hit gold with £0 signing who's worth more than Elliott & Sancho

The international break might well have come at the best possible time for Aston Villa.

After all, their opening results back in the Premier League this season have been nothing short of abysmal, with a seriously worrying 3-0 defeat last time out to Crystal Palace leaving them without a win from their first three league clashes.

Aston Villa managerUnaiEmeryreacts

On top of giving the Villans some room to assess after a poor start, the break has also given Unai Emery apt time to be at the training ground and work out where new recruits Harvey Elliott and Jadon Sancho fit in.

Having both arrived through the door on deadline day, the Spaniard will be praying that both the loan signings can be positive influences moving forward that lift his out-of-sorts side from their current malaise.

What Elliott & Sancho can offer Villa

Despite arriving in the Midlands as loanees initially, it’s safe to say both Elliott and Sancho are already well-versed in the challenges of the Premier League.

The midfield duo can boast 184 top-flight appearances between them in England, with Sancho just fresh off another loan stint himself with Chelsea, away from parent side Manchester United.

The reserve Red Devils figure came into his own at Stamford Bridge, with a promising seven goal contributions coming his way from 34 league appearances for Enzo Maresca’s Blues.

As another temporary option for Emery to call upon down the wings, Sancho could well go down as a shrewd acquisition, considering his transfer valuation, as per Football Transfers, stands at £27m.

Elliott may also be capable of the spectacular, scoring a crucial goal in the Champions League against PSG and firing home against Brighton towards the end of the campaign. However, his quality wasn’t enough to convince Arne Slot he deserved more game time, with only two starts afforded to him by the Dutchman in the league throughout 2024/25.

While he has often been utilised as an impact substitute at Anfield, the 22-year-old will surely be capable of offering even more quality to the Villa attack alongside Sancho, with the £33m-rated star up to 15 Premier League goal contributions himself.

While Sancho and Elliott will no doubt become key figures in the team at some point this season, Emery already has one dependable figure who’s worth more than the summer signings.

The Villa "monster" worth more than Elliott & Sancho

Despite experiencing such a slow start out of the blocks, Emery and Co can still flex some expensive assets in their camp.

Villa were fortunate to keep both Ollie Watkins and Morgan Rogers around past the chaotic transfer window, with Rogers’ value increasing all the way up to a jaw-dropping £99m, according to the CIES Football Observatory, amid interest in his services from Sancho’s parent employers.

Boubacar Kamara has also undergone a similar transformation at Villa Park, with the French midfielder’s valuation continuing to soar, having initially joined the West Midlands club on a free transfer.

The energetic 25-year-old has been a regular presence in the Villa treatment room since he left his native France behind in 2022 – with a hamstring concern already derailing his 2024/25 season – but he has consistently shone at the heart of Emery’s midfield when fit, having even been branded a “monster” by Sky Sports’ Adam Bate for his tenacity centrally.

Indeed, his fierce, battling nature was clear for all to see on the opening day of the Premier League, with a whopping ten duels won in total as Villa and Newcastle United played out a tense stalemate.

Emery’s men arguably lacked this same bite against Palace with Kamara missing, with his assured nature on the ball – which saw him average an 89% pass accuracy last season in the league – further bolstering the argument that he’s a guaranteed starter when injury niggles aren’t shackling him.

Off the back of being consistently dependable when fit, Kamara’s value now stands out at a mightily impressive £48m, which is more than both Elliott and Sancho, despite considerable fanfare greeting their arrivals.

While these new additions will undoubtedly boost a goal-shy Villa outfit, it could be that Kamara’s eventual return from injury empowers Emery’s downbeat side even more, having been a stable glue for the Villans for many a season now.

Everton failed with last-gasp attempt to sign £22m gem with "huge future"

Everton failed in their efforts to sign a player with a “huge future” right at the end of the summer transfer window, seeing an offer for his services turned down.

Rohl "really excited" about Everton move

The Blues managed to complete the signing of Freiburg midfielder Merlin Rohl on deadline day, adding in one more player talented player to David Moyes’ squad.

The German is clearly raring to get going at his new club once club football returns after the international break, speaking of his delight at his move to Everton after his switch was sealed.

“I’m really excited and full of joy to sign for Everton. It’s a big club, with great history and great fans. It’s the right time for me to join Everton. It feels like a shifting point for the Club. The future looks really good and I’m excited to be part of it.

Merlin Rohl for Germany U21s

“I’ve watched the evolution of the Club closely. With the manager and stadium, there are a lot of positives. “I just love to play football and can’t wait to play in front of such passionate fans in such a great stadium.”

It was a strong summer for Everton overall, with Jack Grealish and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall among the star additions, while Tyler Dibling is a player with a big future in the game. Now, it has been claimed that the Merseysiders missed out on signing another young star.

Everton failed with bid for future star

According to a report from reports in Spain [via Sport Witness], Everton submitted a last-gasp offer for Espanyol right-back Omar El Hilali, but were rebuffed in their efforts to snap him up before the window closed. Nottingham Forest, Wolves and Como were all in the same boat, but the £22m-rated defender ended up staying put at his current club.

It is a shame to see Everton fail to sign El Hilali, considering what an eye-catching young player he is, already making 90 appearances for Espanyol at the age of just 21.

He has also been capped at both Under-23 and Under-20 level for Morocco, while scout Jacek Kulig has tipped him to have a “huge future” in the game.

Hopefully, the chance still arises for Everton to go back in for El Hilali in the near future, whether that be in January or next summer, with the Moroccan a footballer who could add so much long-term quality to a position that has too often seen ageing players used there in recent years, from Seamus Coleman to Ashley Young.

He could also provide good competition for Jake O’Brien, who has become a very solid right-back for the Blues, but is also a centre-back by trade.

Crystal Palace want to sign £26m star from under nose of Nottingham Forest

Crystal Palace have started off the campaign with a trophy to their name and could now be set to go toe-to-toe with Nottingham Forest to sign a talented midfield operator, per reports.

Crystal Palace lose CAS appeal after winning Community Shield

Oliver Glasner and his club have been involved in a turbulent couple of days that saw them win the FA Community Shield against Liverpool at Wembley Stadium, though the joy of another day in the sun has been blighted by recent developments.

Taking to social media platform X, journalist Ben Jacobs delivered that Crystal Palace have lost their CAS appeal against Europa League expulsion, and they will now have to settle for a place in the Europa Conference League this term.

Marc Guehi lifts the Community Shield with Crystal Palace

He said: “Crystal Palace have lost their CAS appeal and will play in the UEFA Conference League this season. Nottingham Forest will replace them in the Europa League. Palace will consider all legal options.”

Nottingham Forest will replace Crystal Palace in the Europa League, igniting more fire between both clubs ahead of their meeting on matchday two of the Premier League season next weekend.

Chelsea await in their opener at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, and the Eagles will hope to bring Leicester City playmaker Bilal El Khannouss into the fold as soon as possible, even if his arrival depends on Eberechi Eze leaving the club.

Crystal Palace now hold strong interest in "gifted" £17m ace, bid planned

Veteran Raheem Sterling has held talks over a move to Selhurst Park and may be another option to provide a spark of creativity across the forthcoming season.

However, Glasner also appears to be focused on legs in central areas and could now be set to try and trump Nottingham Forest in the process.

Crystal Palace battle Nottingham Forest for Yunus Musah

According to reports in Italy cited via Area Napoli, Rai Sport journalist Ciro Venerato has confirmed Crystal Palace have joined Nottingham Forest in the race to sign AC Milan midfielder Yunus Musah.

Napoli are also keen on the United States international and although the Rossoneri could ask for just under £26 million, even a fee of £21.6 million may be enough to prize him away from the Serie A giants.

Capable of playing in a variety of central midfield roles or on the right flank, the 22-year-old is a versatile presence who can deputise where needed. It should be noted that Napoli are looking to sell Giacomo Raspadori before accelerating their pursuit.

Labelled a “complete player” by Stefano Pioli, the AC Milan star completed 21 dribbles and won 19 tackles in the Italian top-flight last term, illustrating why he is a competent operator in several positions.

After losing their Europa League place to Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace could make a statement by bringing him to Selhurst Park as they now look forward after kicking the new term off with an encouraging victory over Liverpool in the Community Shield.

Imagine him & Ekitike: Liverpool lining up move for "world-class" £85m star

Liverpool fans were treated to some fine football last season, with Arne Slot’s Reds barnstorming their way through the 2024/25 campaign and winning the Premier League comfortably.

To think that Slot achieved this, taking the baton from Jurgen Klopp as he did, without any real first-team investment, is quite unbelievable. FSG did move to sign Federico Chiesa from Juventus for £12.5m, but he only started once in the top flight all term, that appearance coming in May, after the title had been wrapped up.

This summer, however, paints a different picture. Wide defenders Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong look fit for a title-winning squad, and Florian Wirtz even more so, the German creative joining Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen for a British-record £116m fee.

The matter of a centre-forward remains unresolved. Liverpool’s top target is Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak, but the Magpies are rather fond of their prized silver.

As such, a deal for Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike is in the works, with the Frenchman actually submitting a transfer request to speed things along. Such a profile is duly needed, especially with Luis Diaz facing a potential Anfield exit.

The latest on Luis Diaz's Liverpool future

Diaz, 28, is one of Slot’s most trusted lieutenants. Last season, he enjoyed a career-best in England after notching 25 goal contributions across all competitions.

Liverpool forward Luis Diaz

The Colombian, however, has entered the penultimate year of his contract and wants a pay rise. Such a rise doesn’t seem to be forthcoming, and thus, he’s seeking a route out of Merseyside.

Barcelona and Bayern Munich have been among the frontrunners, both enticed by Diaz’s electric pace and his potency and his versatility across wide and central attacking berths.

However, Barcelona are now pushing ahead with a deal for Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford, leaving Bayern and suitors over in the Saudi Pro League to engage in a straight shootout.

If Diaz does go, Liverpool will need a replacement, even though Cody Gakpo grew in strength last term and even though FSG plan to sign the versatile Ekitike.

Liverpool line up Diaz heir

Spanish reports have indicated that, while Arsenal remain favourites, Liverpool may yet push ahead and pursue a deal for Real Madrid’s Rodrygo this summer.

The South American is widely considered one of the most talented forwards in the world, but Xabi Alonso’s chock-full frontline has made him expendable.

Arsenal are preparing an offer worth €80m (£68m) for the Brazilian forward, though Los Blancos are expected to reject this as they hold out for their original €100m (£85m) asking price.

The potential for advancement over on Merseyside hinges solely on the outcome of Diaz’s transfer saga.

Why Liverpool want Rodrygo

With Rodrygo’s illustrious Real Madrid journey seemingly drawing to a close, Liverpool might find themselves regretting not making their move, should Diaz indeed leave.

The 24-year-old’s track record speaks for itself. However, Rodrygo is rarely deployed on the left wing, his favourite and most productive position, for the Spanish giants have Vinicius Junior in that position, and Kylian Mbappe too.

By signing Rodrygo, Liverpool could secure a “world-class” winger, as he has been dubbed by former teammate Luka Modric, for the coming era, one who could combine with Ekitike to create a deadly strikeforce on the same level as Liverpool’s before, when Jurgen Klopp was in his Anfield heyday.

This blend of experience and up-and-coming exuberance could work wonders for Slot’s side, especially when considering there’s a legendary figure in Mohamed Salah to complete the set on the right flank.

Even in spite of a ‘poor’ season, Rodrygo has finished with as many goal involvements as Diaz, and indeed, has wonderfully illustrated his propensity for impact when coming off the left, with six goals and six assists across only 12 matches as a left winger.

Moreover, his six-goal haul in La Liga, while not a fine representation of his clinical edge by any stretch, also returned only one missed big chance, as per Sofascore, which plays right into Ekitike’s hands.

Frankfurt’s rising talent has the makings of an elite goalscorer, but he’s also a sharp and intuitive player, capable of achieving a wide range of things when in full flow, which could make him a dream partner for Rodrygo at the top end of the pitch.

As per FBref, the 23-year-old ranked among the top 10% of strikers across Europe’s top five leagues last season for assists, the top 6% for shot-creating actions, the top 4% for progressive carries and successful take-ons, and the top 20% for ball recoveries per 90.

What can we ascertain from this? Well, Ekitike’s movements and link-up play would actively promote Rodrygo’s own quest for goals. Hardly a target man in the strictest sense of the word, the adroit forward’s ability to create and his knack and deceiving opponents with off-the-ball movement would play right into Rodrygo’s goalscoring focus.

Not that the Real Madrid man is so one-dimensional. After all, in La Liga last season, he completed 91% of his passes while averaging 1.6 key passes per game, which is an absurd rate of crispness for one performing in and around the final third, especially when considering he chipped in with regular creative balls.

Real Madrid's Rodrygo

With a rich attacking crop and a system which was set up without a hitch last season, Slot will be confident that by adding players such as Ekitike and Rodrygo, he can grow his Liverpool team into an even more powerful and threatening state.

Such players could combine to create something truly special, not just set up to defend their Premier League title but also to challenge for the biggest prizes across the board. Year in, year out.

Marchant de Lange leads Gloucestershire fightback after Timm van der Gugten's five-for

Seventeen wickets fall on opening day as Glamorgan are thwarted after early dominance

ECB Reporters Network30-Jun-2024

Timm van der Gugten claimed a five-wicket haul•Getty Images

Marchant de Lange played a key role with bat and ball as Gloucestershire staged a spirited fightback on the opening day of the Vitality County Championship Second Division match against Glamorgan at Cheltenham. The larger-than-life South African scored 46 not out and shared in a record-breaking stand of 75 with Ajeet Singh Dale as the home side recovered from 88 for 8 at lunch to post 179 in their first innings. He then took 2 for 21 in six overs with the ball as Glamorgan subsided to 133 for 7 by the time bad light brought a premature close with 3.5 overs unused.Timm van der Gugten was the pick of the Glamorgan bowlers, returning season-best figures of 5 for 59 to justify skipper Sam Northeast’s decision to field first. But his efforts were matched by Gloucestershire overseas all-rounder Beau Webster, who produced a startling three-wicket burst in 12 balls on a day when 17 wickets fell.Kiran Carlson top-scored for Glamorgan with 37, but the Welsh county still trail by 46 runs with three first innings wicket remaining.Twice dismissed cheaply when suffering a chastening innings defeat at the hands of Yorkshire in Scarborough earlier in the week, Gloucestershire’s batsmen faced a test of nerve after being inserted on a green-tinged surface beneath cloud-laden skies. Although the pitch was initially low and slow and the new ball moved off the seam, there could be no mitigating circumstances to explain away an abject surrender that saw the home side go into lunch on 88 for 8, a parlous situation characterised by poor shot selection and execution.Cameron Bancroft set the tone in the very first over, edging van der Gugten’s second delivery behind to provide the first of five catches for wicketkeeper Chris Cooke. Ollie Price fell to the same bowler in identical fashion, pushing at a delivery that kept low and being caught at the wicket.Ben Charlesworth and skipper Graeme van Buuren succumbed cheaply to ill-advised leg-side shots as Dan Douthwaite produced an incisive five-over spell of 2 for 7 from the College Lawn end, while James Bracey missed an attempted leg-side glance and was bowled by a ball from Andy Gorvin that deflected off his pad and onto the stumps as Gloucestershire subsided to 49 for 5.Marnus Labuschagne came on to bowl seam up and afford the batsmen a period of respite, Miles Hammond and Webster adding 36 for the sixth wicket and hinting at a recovery. But the return of van der Gugten served to reinforce Welsh superiority, the overseas recruit removing Hammond lbw for 21 and then making a mess of Webster’s stumps when the Australian played down the wrong line to a ball that moved back into him. Labuschagne then had Zaman Akhter caught behind without scoring to give the home side food for thought during the interval. When Matt Taylor was comprehensively bowled by van der Gugten with the score on 104 shortly following the resumption, the end of the innings appeared to be in sight. But de Lange and Singh Dale had other ideas, the last wicket pair opening their shoulders to post a quickfire 50 in 47 balls and force Glamorgan’s seamers onto the back foot for the first time.By the time Singh Dale hoisted Mason Crane’s leg spin to long-on and departed for a 45-ball 32, he and de Lange had surpassed the 73 made by John Mortimore and Jack Davey in 1972, the previous highest last wicket partnership for Gloucestershire in matches against Glamorgan.Gloucestershire were grateful to the spirited de Lange, whose agricultural approach yielded an unbeaten 46 from 37 balls, with a quartet of fours and 2 sixes, and enlivened a hitherto subdued festival audience. It said a good deal about what had gone before, that these two were able to score more runs than the combined efforts of Gloucestershire’s top seven.Buoyed by the antics of their lower order, Gloucestershire kept plugging away with the ball end enjoyed no little success. Taylor had Eddie Byrom held at mid-on in the act of pulling, Akhter claimed the prized wicket of Labuschagne, who pulled to deep mid-wicket for 19, and de Lange induced Billy Root to edge a catch behind and depart for 21 as the visitors slipped to 59-3 in the 23rd over.Gloucestershire then passed up an opportunity to dismiss Carlson on 11, de Lange putting down a chance on the deep fine leg boundary off the bowling of Singh Dale. No matter. Webster more than made amends when removing Northeast and Cooke in the space of three deliveries in the 35th over to reduce the Welsh county to 104 for 5.Northeast contributed 19 in a stand of 45 for the fourth wicket with Carlson, only to then push at a length ball and offer a catch behind. Cooke fell in identical fashion and Douthwaite then succumbed to a leg-side strangle, caught at the wicket as Webster made further inroads to finish with 3 for 16 from eight overs.De Lange then struck a potentially crucial blow shortly before the close, persuading Carlson to send a top-edged hook down the throat of Hammond at deep fine leg and depart for a 62-ball 37 with Glamorgan still 54 behind.

Man Utd contacted over chance to sign 27 y/o striker who supports Arsenal

As Manchester United continue their search for a striker, they’ve reportedly been offered the chance to sign a Serie A forward who has admitted in the past that he supports Arsenal.

Man Utd rejected by Liam Delap

If those at Old Trafford believed that the Manchester United name could carry them through the summer transfer window without European football, then Liam Delap’s rejection has handed them a rude awakening. Although it seemed as though the Red Devils were in the driving seat in pursuit of Delap’s signature, he has since reportedly turned them down in search of playing among Europe’s elite at Chelsea.

With the Ipswich Town forward closing in on a move to Stamford Bridge, Manchester United must simply go again in pursuit of attacking additions. Already, to their credit, they’re set to welcome Matheus Cunha, but Ruben Amorim’s side needs more reinforcements going forward than just the Brazilian this summer.

To that end, fresh names have at least already emerged among the headlines. The likes of Bryan Mbeumo, for example, have recently found themselves linked to Old Trafford in what would be an excellent move for Manchester United.

Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo

The Brentford winger enjoyed a fantastic campaign under Thomas Frank – hitting the 20-goal mark in the Premier League – and would undoubtedly hand Amorim an instant upgrade on the likes of Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee.

He’s not the only one who’s been mentioned, however. Alongside Mbeumo, Manchester United have now reportedly been offered to chance to sign a former Chelsea forward.

Man Utd offered chance to sign Tammy Abraham

According to The Boot Room, Manchester United have now been approached by the representatives of Tammy Abraham over a move from AS Roma this summer. The England forward struggled on loan at AC Milan this season and his agent is now attempting to secure a move back to the Premier League by contacting the Red Devils.

AC Milan'sTammyAbrahamreacts after the match

Given his Chelsea ties and recent struggles, the forward would have pressure to win Old Trafford over as quickly as possible if he completed a summer switch. And what wouldn’t help the 27-year-old do that is his own admission a few years ago that he was an Arsenal fan growing up.

Abraham told reporters during a loan spell at Bristol City during the early years of his career: “To be honest I was an Arsenal fan. It didn’t make any difference at Chelsea. When you’re young and you choose who to support, if it’s a family thing, it’s a family thing.”

Abraham’s childhood club won’t be something that concerns Amorim, however. Instead, the Manchester United boss may look towards Jose Mourinho’s previous praise as an indication of the forward’s talent. The self-proclaimed Special One described Abraham as “amazing” during his time in charge of Roma.
