What's the record for sixes in an IPL season?

And when was the last time Australia fielded 11 right-handers in a Test?

Steven Lynch03-Nov-2020I’d like to know which Test and ODI sides contained the players with the most such matches to their name, who were still the most inexperienced member of those sides? asked Sunindu Marasinghe from Sri Lanka
I hope I’ve understood this question correctly, and that what we’re looking for is the players with the most caps at the time for a particular XI, but who were the least capped member of that team – the most-experienced least-experienced players, if you like.Shiva Jayaraman of ESPNcricinfo’s stats team kindly took a few minutes off from IPL duty to help out with this one. In Tests, the answer appears to come from the ICC World XI in the one-off Super Series Test against Australia in Sydney in 2005-06: the man in that team with the fewest caps was England’s Steve Harmison, with 35. That’s obviously an unusual case: the answer for a genuine Test team is a least experienced player who already had 22 caps. This has happened twice – by Patrick Patterson for West Indies against Australia in St John’s, Antigua, in April 1991, and Rohit Sharma for India against Sri Lanka in Delhi in December 2017.In one-day internationals, the least capped member of Pakistan’s XI against New Zealand in Lahore during the 1996 World Cup was wicketkeeper Rashid Latif, who had already played a staggering 74 ODIs. Next comes Darren Lehmann, who was the junior member of the Australian side that won the World Cup final against Pakistan at Lord’s in June 1999, with 52 ODI caps.Australia have had a long line of left-handers – Border, Taylor, Gilchrist, Hayden, Warner… so how long is it since they fielded a team of 11 right-handers in a Test? asked Rajiv Radhakrishnan from England
The answer here is quite a surprise: in over 800 Test matches since 1886, Australia have only once had a team composed entirely of right-handers, against West Indies in Adelaide in 1930-31.The last team from anywhere to field a team composed entirely of right-hand batsmen was India, against West Indies in Port-of-Spain in August 2016. In all there have been 323 instances in all Tests.Sikandar Raza of Zimbabwe has remarkably similar batting averages in Test, first-class, ODI and List A cricket. Has there ever been anyone with less variation? asked Rafay Iqbal from England
The Zimbabwe allrounder Sikandar Raza does indeed have remarkably similar batting averages: before the current one-day series against Pakistan, he averaged 34.56 in Tests and 34.58 in one-day internationals, and 34.27 in first-class cricket and 34.28 in List A matches. There are a few others whose averages are quite similar: Mahela Jayawardene averaged 49.85 in Tests and 49.69 in first-class, then 33.38 in ODIs and 33.67 in List A. Another Sri Lankan, seamer Suranga Lakmal, has batting averages of 11.61 in Tests and 11.62 in first-class, then 9.38 in ODIs and 9.36 in List A. Close to him is India’s Javagal Srinath: batting averages of 14.21 in Tests and 14.50 in first-class, 10.64 in ODIs and 10.48 in List A. Turning to the bowlers, Australia’s Len Pascoe averaged 26.06 with the ball in Tests and 25.60 in first-class, 20.11 in ODIs and 20.52 in List A.But no one is as closely grouped overall as Raza. Just to complete the set, when we researched the question a few days ago he was 34.5 years old!Chris Gayle cracked 59 sixes in 15 matches for RCB in 2012, and was also the winner of the orange cap that season•AFPWhat’s the record for sixes in an IPL season? asked Balasubramanian Sambasivam from India
The most sixes in one season in the Indian Premier League is 59, almost inevitably by Chris Gayle, for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2012 (he also hit 51 in 2013). Another Jamaican, Andre Russell, ran him close with 52 for the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2019. It doesn’t look like the record will be threatened in this year’s competition: as I write, the leading six-hitter is Sanju Samson with 26.Was the Walter Lawrence Trophy awarded in 2020? asked Keith Pollock from England
The Walter Lawrence Trophy is awarded to the scorer of the fastest hundred in the English season: it was first presented in 1934 (Frank Woolley was the first winner) and has been a regular feature ever since, although it fell into abeyance after the Second World War, and was not resumed until 1966. Originally given to the scorer of the fastest hundred in first-class cricket, the award was widened in 2008 to include one-day and T20 matches. And the 2020 winner came, unsurprisingly, from a T20 match: for Nottinghamshire against Durham in Chester-le-Street on August 29, Joe Clarke hurtled to three figures in just 44 balls, with eight sixes and seven fours. And there’s an update on last week’s question about horses named after cricketers, from Beville Blackman from Trinidad
“In 1994 Lash Dem Lara, a horse named after new Test record holder Brian Lara, won the Trinidad & Tobago Derby.” And a few people emailed to remind me that the Nottinghamshire and England favourite Derek Randall was nicknamed “Arkle”, after another famous racehorse.Use our feedback form or the Ask Steven Facebook page to ask your stats and trivia questions

Cal Raleigh Announces Decision on Playing for World Baseball Classic

Team USA is adding another member to its star-studded lineup for the 2026 World Baseball Classic—Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh.

Raleigh announced on All-Star media day that he will be officially joining the roster for the World Baseball Classic next year. Raleigh will join Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes, Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr., and New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge, who will serve as Team USA's captain, in competing for the championship.

"It's like every kid's dream, right?" Raleigh said. "You grow up watching , and the whole thing, and you get 'USA' across your chest. It's like a dream, getting to play for your country. … What a special chance."

Team USA will be looking to win the World Baseball Classic for just the second time, after previously taking home the gold in 2017. They came close to repeating as champions in 2023, but lost to Japan in the first place game.

For Raleigh, joining the Team USA roster is just the latest moment in his breakout season. Raleigh has unequivocally become a star this season, recording a league-leading 38 home runs and 82 RBIs before the All-Star break. He has broken onto the national scene, and is set to play in his first Home Run Derby and All-Star Game this week. Next year, he'll add competing in the World Baseball Classic to his rapidly growing résumé.

The 2026 World Baseball Classic will take place next March.

Tigers' Jackson Jobe Threw a Sinker So Filthy It Scared Announcer Jason Benetti

When Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Jackson Jobe threw a hard sinker inside to tie up Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette, he shocked Tigers play-by-play announcer Jason Benetti. Bichette whiffed on the nasty pitch to strike out and end the second inning before Benetti even knew what happened.

The surprise of the 97-mph sinker resulted in one of the wackiest and most amazing calls you'll hear.

"Oh my goodness, a lightning bolt directly at Bichette," Benetti exclaimed into the microphone via FanDuel Spots Network Detroit. "That'll activate your nervous system. … Anybody have an exorcist?"

Jobe had a nice outing Sunday, pitching six innings and giving up six hits and two earned runs while striking out five batters. Benetti had a busy Sunday himself, too, as Jobe's filthy strikeout wasn't even the first time he said "Oh my goodness!" into the microphone during the game.

In the bottom of the first inning, Tigers left fielder Akil Baddoo made back-to-back incredible catches which resulted in three outs and got Jobe out of a first-inning jam. And Benetti loved both plays:

The Tigers held on to beat the Blue Jays 3–2 Sunday, taking the three-game weekend series after the rubber match. Hopefully Benetti can get some rest after the Tigers kept him on edge over the weekend.

Newcastle now looking to sign Hayden Hackney as Eddie Howe concern revealed

Newcastle United are now believed to be one of the clubs who are battling to complete the signing of Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney.

The Magpies arguably have one of the most complete midfields in the Premier League currently, with the starting options at Eddie Howe’s disposal the envy of many managers.

In Bruno Guimarares, Sandro Tonali and Joelinton, Newcastle have a trio who complement each perfectly, playing a big role in their success in recent years.

Bruno’s passion acts as the heartbeat for the Magpies, with the Brazilian such a popular figure from day one at St James’ Park, while Tonali’s box-to-box brilliance is seeing him become a more highly-rated player by the week. Then there’s Joelinton, whose physical prowess is such a potent weapon for his side.

Despite this, there is a feeling that added midfield depth is required for Newcastle, which is why they have been linked with a move for an exciting young talent.

Newcastle looking to sign Hayden Hackney

Speaking to Football Insider, former scout Mick Brown talked up Newcastle’s interest in Hackney, as the Magpies look to beat others to his signature with Howe concerned at his strength in depth.

“Hackney is a top player and he’s somebody I rate very highly. It’s no surprise there is interest in him, I’m told a lot of clubs have been keeping tabs on him, and it seems Newcastle are now one of those clubs. If Hackney was at Newcastle tomorrow, I don’t think he’d get into their midfield, because the options they’ve got in there at the moment are pretty much fixed.

“But he is the sort of player they would love to have who can come into the team when needed. Howe has been a bit concerned about the players they’ve got behind those three in there. He’s a very talented player with plenty of room to grow and develop, so he could go into that Newcastle squad with a view to becoming a key player in the future.

“With the three they’ve got in midfield at the moment, he would be going in there to provide depth, and whether that’s what he will be interested in, I’m not sure. But it’s definitely something that would make sense for Newcastle.”

Hackney could be an outstanding long-term addition for Newcastle, acting as a strong squad player before maturing into a key starter over time.

The 23-year-old has shone in a Middlesbrough shirt for years now, making 127 appearances and registering 23 goal contributions, and his former manager Michael Carrick was a big admirer of his.

“He’s grounded, he’s humble, he’s down to earth and loves to learn. He loves the place and he loves the club as well. To have that, added with the talent he has got, it’s the perfect scenario. I think it just shows his consistency really, over a long period of time. It’s not easy when you’re a younger player, but he’s certainly done that.”

Better than Bruno: Newcastle star is now their best signing of the PIF era

This Newcastle star has impressed under Howe

ByJoe Nuttall Nov 1, 2025

Hopefully, the fact that Hackney wouldn’t have to move far works in Newcastle’s favour, also seeing the club heading in a positive direction under Howe.

Fourth-wicket stand with Jake Libby keeps quarter-finals in sight as Asa Tribe’s unbeaten century goes in vain

Worcestershire 298 for 5 (Jones 110*, Libby 77) beat Glamorgan 297 for 7 (Tribe 122*, Hurle 56) by five wicketsA career-best List A score of 110 not out from Rob Jones guided Worcestershire Rapids to an important five-wicket win over Glamorgan which keeps them on track for a quarter-final place in the Metro Bank One Day Cup.Asa Tribe had earlier batted through Glamorgan’s innings for 122 in his side’s impressive total of 297 and the visitors looked to be in control early in the reply as they reduced the hosts to 78 for 3.A staggering fourth-wicket partnership of 172 between Jake Libby (77) and Jones anchored the run chase for Worcestershire, as they swung the momentum back in their favour. Jones hit the winning runs in the 49th over.Glamorgan’s bright start in the sunshine was only blemished by the loss of Eddie Byrom for 41.Youngster Henry Hurle caught the eye with some expansive shots, scoring 14 off one Ethan Brookes over as the side bottom of Group A passed 100 in the 20th over.Hurle and Tribe took a liking to a lacklustre Rapids bowling seam attack, as the pair brought up their respective half-centuries in consecutive overs, with Tribe showing his particular disdain towards any short pitched bowling, thrashing the ball through midwicket with frequency. The second-wicket stand of 104 was ended by Brett D’Oliveira, who bowled Hurle for an impressive 56, as Worcestershire seized the initiative, taking three more wickets for just 26 runs.Kieran Carlson was the first in a cluster of three wickets to fall, as he succumbed to Ben Allison, before D’Oliveira (2 for 46) picked up his second wicket of an instrumental spell.Waite’s metronomical afternoon with the ball saw him rewarded when Billy Root feathered a full ball behind to Henry Cullen, as the medium-pacer ended his spell shortly after with outstanding figures of 10-2-23-1.Dan Douthwaite joined the not-out opener, and upped the ante from the get-go, taking Glamorgan beyond the 250 mark, before Tribe notched his maiden List A century with the final ball of the 46th over.Douthwaite’s cameo of 37 from 26 balls was cut short at the death, but Tribe was unbeaten on 122 to see his side finish on an above par 297 for 7.Despite losing D’Oliveira in the first over, the hosts made an otherwise positive start to the chase, largely due to a composed knock for 19-year-old Dan Lategan, that took Worcestershire past fifty without further damage. The 17th over of the proved costly however, as the home side lost both set batters – with Carlson taking a stunning one-handed catch at extra cover to remove Kashif for 22, before a catastrophic mix-up involving Jake Libby saw Lategan run-out four short of a maiden List A fifty. The onus fell on Libby and new man Jones to guide the home side out of their troubling position at 78 for 3, with Glamorgan looking to take advantage of their early wickets. Both batters shouldered the responsibility in fine style, with Jones returning to form and Libby making his way to a fourth fifty of the competition.Their 172-run partnership was ended when Andy Gorvin took a fine catch running back over his head to dismiss Libby for 77, with the departing skipper’s side still requiring 48 from the final six overs.Jones brought up a sensational 101-ball hundred with the chase nearing its climax, but even the departure of Ethan Brookes in the dying stages did not deter the home side, as Cullen batted through with Jones to see the Rapids to a crucial five-wicket victory.

India sight victory after Gill buries England with runs

India need seven fifth-day wickets to beat England at Edgbaston and head to Lord’s with the series level. It would be a first Test win as captain for Shubman Gill, who followed his 269 in the first innings with 161 in the second, declared at drinks to set a world-record target of 608, then watched Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep prise out England’s top order. The fourth day was dominated by intrigue about the timing of India’s declaration, which arrived far later than many expected and left England facing an ideological problem. After a single draw – and that one prompted by two days of rain – in the last three years, would they finally tone down their approach with the bat and accept that winning was off the table? The answer will only become clear tomorrow, with two of the three wickets that fell on Saturday evening owing to Akash’s skill rather than their batters’ attacking intent. By the close, Ollie Pope was clinging on after a working-over from India’s seamers, and the notion that England could score more than 500 runs on the final day seemed academic.Siraj had Zak Crawley to thank for his early strike. Crawley endured a miserable day, dropping a catch to reprieve Rishabh Pant, and after playing out a maiden in the first over of England’s second innings – as though setting the tone for a more watchful approach – he was suckered into a hard-handed drive which flew to slip.Deep was sublime with the new ball, adding two second-innings wickets to his four in the first. He cramped Ben Duckett for room with a ball that angled into the left-hander from around the wicket and then decked in off the seam to induce a chop-on, then found late movement away to beat Root on the outside edge and clean him up.India came close to a fourth wicket, with Pope characteristically frenzied early in his innings, and the only blemish on their bowling effort came in the form of two burned reviews in the first ten overs. But if Gill is still getting to grips with the DRS, he has proved across these first two Tests that he is a far, far better player than his average heading into this tour might have suggested.Gill’s latest hundred – his third of the series, and eighth overall – came wrapped in gift wrap, and adorned with a gold bow. He scored more than half of his runs off England’s spinners, who hardly turned a ball between them on a lifeless pitch, milked singles at will with the field spread, and treated occasional bouncer barrages with utter disdain. He seized his opportunity to reassert his dominance after grinding England into the dirt in the first innings, and broke a number of records along the way. Gill is the first player in the format’s history, spanning more than 2,500 matches, to score 200 and 150 in the same match; only once has a batter scored more than his 430-run aggregate in a single Test.Akash Deep was terrific with the new ball•Getty Images

Gill had walked in to the backdrop of gloomy skies on the fourth morning, after Brydon Carse had induced an outside edge from Karun Nair, and survived an lbw review off his sixth ball thanks to an inside edge. But he was soon into his work, playing late to steer boundaries away behind square on the off side, and after a sharp first spell, the stiff Carse was not seen again. After KL Rahul, who batted fluently for 55, was cleaned up by Josh Tongue’s full outswinger, Pant made his intentions clear by charging down the pitch to slap his fourth ball back over Tongue’s head for six. Dropped on 10 by Zak Crawley, Pant threw his bat – quite literally, twice losing grip of it – during his 65, flogging both Tongue and Shoaib Bashir.Ben Stokes ran out of ideas – and fit bowlers – as the same pair toiled away after the lunch break. The wisdom of Tongue’s short-ball ploy to Gill was proven by a flurry of six, four and four off consecutive balls, followed by another six and a flat-bat for four in his next over which took him past 50.Pant’s dismissal – caught at long-off, while his bat flew to midwicket – brought some respite, with Ravindra Jadeja curiously ponderous after a promotion to No. 6. But Gill marched relentlessly on, nudging Bashir off his hips to reach his third hundred in four innings before hitting Chris Woakes’ first three balls after tea for six, four and four.Jadeja had 25 off 68 at tea but switched gears straight after, skipping down and launching his first ball of the evening session back over Bashir’s head for six. He celebrated with his trademark sword-swish after cutting Joe Root for four to reach fifty, while Gill freed his arms by launching Root and Bashir into the stands.Gill miscued a return catch to Bashir on 161, but the declaration was still on ice: Nitish Kumar Reddy walked to the crease to pantomime boos from the Eric Hollies Stand, then a chant of “boring, boring India”. After Reddy holed out second ball, Washington Sundar lofted over cover to take the lead to 600; when the clock ticked past five, the signal finally arrived.

James Maddison snubs Jermain Defoe and nominates Chelsea icon for PL Hall of Fame

Tottenham Hotspur star James Maddison has nominated a Chelsea icon for the Premier League Hall of Fame, ahead of Jermain Defoe and Teddy Sheringham.

2025 Premier League Hall of Fame vote underway

Voting for the 2025 inductees into the Premier League Hall of Fame is now underway, with the fan vote now closed, and the results have been shared with the existing 24 members, who for the first time will get the final say in who joins them.

The likes of Alan Shearer, Steven Gerrard and Sir Alex Ferguson are among the current members, with all the legendary former players and managers allowed to choose who else is inducted, ahead of the big reveal in early November.

Cesc Fabregas, Sol Campbell and Jermaine Defoe are among the players that have been shortlisted this time around, with the ex-Tottenham striker sitting 10th on the all-time top scorers list, which should stand him in good stead to be inducted.

Fellow former Tottenham striker Teddy Sheringham is also among the nominees, having found the back of the net 146 times across a very successful career in the Premier League, but Maddison has snubbed both former Spurs players in favour of a Chelsea legend.

In a video on the Premier League’s TikTok account, the former Leicester City man said: “Eden Hazard, got it! For me, one of the best players to ever play in the Premier League. Got his shirt on my wall and probably my favourite one on there. So I’ll go with Edwin (van der Sar) and Eden Hazard, I’m happy with that.”

Hazard undoubtedly among the Premier League's greatest players

2024 inductee John Terry has previously spoken fondly about playing alongside Hazard, describing the Belgian as an “absolute superstar” and praising his ability to take games by the scruff of the neck, despite showing little interest in pre-match tactical instructions.

The enigmatic Chelsea legend is well-known to not have been the best of trainers, but he certainly came alive on match day, chipping in with 85 goals and 57 assists in 245 games, during a highly successful spell with the Blues.

The 34-year-old won two league titles and the 2014-15 Premier League Player of the Season award during his time at Stamford Bridge, so there can be no denying that his Hall of Fame nomination is fully merited.

As such, it is no surprise that Maddison has suggested Hazard should be inducted in 2025, but Tottenham fans will no doubt be hoping that Defoe can win the battle, given the Englishman’s exploits in north London.

Arsenal battling Tottenham to sign "exceptional" £87k-a-week Real Madrid star

Arsenal are now battling Tottenham Hotspur for the signature of a Real Madrid star, with both clubs conducting scouting missions.

Gunners battling Tottenham and Newcastle for new attacker

The Gunners made major improvements to their already fearsome attack during the summer transfer window, bringing in the likes of Eberechi Eze, Noni Madueke and Viktor Gyokeres, with the Swedish striker making an impressive start to life in north London.

Having pushed Liverpool and Manchester City close over the past three seasons, Mikel Arteta’s side clearly have the quality to end their long wait for a Premier League title, and the manager’s tactics are arguably the main thing holding them back.

After the 1-1 draw against Manchester City, Gary Neville criticised Arteta for his cautious approach to the game, saying: “He could have been more attacking at Anfield and he wasn’t and certainly against City from the start he could have been more attacking.”

As such, Arteta adopting a more attacking mindset may be the key to the Gunners winning the league, but there has also now been a suggestion that the manager remains keen on improving his options in forward areas.

According to a report from Caught Offside, Arsenal are now battling Tottenham and Newcastle for the signature of Real Madrid star Arda Guler, who has emerged as a crucial player since the arrival of Xabi Alonso as manager.

Consequently, the Spanish giants have no desire to cash in on Guler, but that hardline stance hasn’t halted the interest from elsewhere, with the Gunners sending scouts to watch the attacking midfielder in action in La Liga.

With Madrid expressing no interest in selling the 20-year-old, who is focused on his future at the club, it remains to be seen whether a deal is possible, but there is certainly interest on the north Londoners’ behalf.

After a solid, if not spectacular, first season in Spain, during which the youngster picked up eight La Liga goal contributions, he has really started to find his form this season, picking up three goals and three assists in the opening seven matches.

The Turkey international is particularly adept at setting up chances for his teammates, while he is also an impressive passer of the ball, and strong at winning back possession.

Jose Mourinho has been left particularly impressed with the £87k-a-week starlet in the past, describing him as “exceptional”, and he clearly has the ability to succeed at the Emirates Stadium, having established himself as a key player for Real Madrid.

That said, it will not be too disappointing if Arsenal miss out, given that they are already blessed with options in attacking midfield, having signed Eze in the summer.

– Houve jogos do Botafogo assim.
