Aston Villa must be ruthless with Jed Steer amid Gregg Evans’ update

After a summer that saw Aston Villa splash out around £20m to bring in Emiliano Martinez from Arsenal, Dean Smith has an abundance of riches in the goalkeeping position.

Villa of course had to contend with an unprecedented injury crisis in that area last season, so it was perhaps no surprise to see the club go out and target a new number one.

But with Tom Heaton nearing a return to first-team action – he completed the full 90 minutes for the U23s against Stoke City recently – it’s a position that poses major problems for Smith in terms of man-management.

As well as both Martinez and Heaton, Villa also have the likes of Lovre Kalinic and Jed Steer on their books, ready to call upon if needed.

Steer has been with the club for around seven years now after initially arriving from Norwich City back in 2013, and The Athletic’s Gregg Evans has questioned how long the now 28-year-old can be happy playing second and third fiddle when he could be playing week-in and week-out elsewhere.

Whilst he’s been a loyal servant in his time at Villa Park, surely the club have to be ruthless with the £20k-a-week ace. With Evans adding that Villa have found it very difficult to move on Kalinic, they should potentially refocus their attention on Steer, and allow him to be the man to go.

Both Tony Xia and now Nassef Sawiris can’t be happy with the goalkeeping situation at Villa right now, and it appears best for all parties involved that they make a ruthless call on Steer and cash in on him in the upcoming transfer window.

Tottenham Hotspur: Philippe Coutinho move to Spurs or Premier League ruled out

According to an exclusive update courtesy of talkSPORT, Barcelona playmaker and recent Champions League winner Philippe Coutinho has been ruled out of making a sensational return to the England this summer – with Catalans boss Ronald Koeman now eager to keep him at the Camp Nou.

The Brazilian, who was recently linked with a move to Spurs, now looks like he will remain in La Liga for the foreseeable future following Barca’s alleged u-turn.

Coutinho had been tipped to move on this summer, particularly to ease the pressure on their wage bill, but Koeman now sees the 62-cap star as part of his future plans, talkSPORT were told.

As a result, Tottenham and chairman Daniel Levy have been dealt a transfer blow over a creative outlet who could have been their ideal answer to Christian Eriksen – with reports from earlier this window indicating an interest.

Coutinho’s agent, Kia Joorabchian, has now revealed that the Spanish giants ‘would like him to return’ after-all – potentially putting an end to a number of Premier League clubs’ interest.

Described as a ‘creative genius’ by Liverpool legend Phil Thompson, it’s little wonder Coutinho was pegged as a potential answer to Spurs’ lack of ingenuity in midfield.

Attempting 2.5 shots per 90 on average last season, all while completing more dribbles than Spurs winger Erik Lamela, It’s clear what he would have offered Tottenham (WhoScored).

Darren Bent lauded the South American as a ‘superstar signing that Spurs need’ – but this latest confirmation from his agent has seemingly dashed all hopes of a move.

Aston Villa: Some fans react to Tyrone Mings development

Some Aston Villa fans have reacted to the news that Tyrone Mings has penned a new contract keeping him at the club until the summer of 2024.

The central defender joined on loan from Bournemouth in January 2019, helping the Claret and Blue to win promotion to the Premier League in the 2018/2019 season.

The 27-year-old went on to join permanently and made 33 top-flight appearances last season and his performances for Dean Smith’s side earned him a call-up for England, making his competitive debut against Bulgaria in October 2019.

Mings follows captain Jack Grealish in committing his future to the club, after the much heralded midfielder signed a new five-year deal last week.

Villa boss Dean Smith has been actively busy this summer in the transfer window, signing Ollie WatkinsÂfrom Brentford on a five-year deal, whileÂMatty Cash has also joined from Nottingham Forest and goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has arrived from Arsenal.

After announcing the news on their official Twitter account, many Villa fans reacted to the update and naturally, they were buzzing.

Liverpool: Predicted XI to face Chelsea in final Anfield game of the season

Liverpool will walk out for their final home game of the season this evening as they prepare to host Chelsea.

The Premier League champions will finally be rewarded for their runaway 2019/20 campaign following their clash with Frank Lampard’s side. The Reds will be presented with their first top flight trophy in 30 years whilst millions of fans watch worldwide.

Since they clinched the title back in June, Liverpool haven’t been their usual fiery selves on the pitch. They have won just two matches out of five since their initial celebrations. Although points no longer matter, Jurgen Klopp and his men will still want to end their home run with a win, especially before they lift the trophy.

Transfer Tavern has predicted how the Merseyside outfit might set up for their final 2019/20 match at Anfield…

In perhaps a bold assumption, Xherdan Shaqiri could get the nod to start on the right-wing against the Blues. The Swiss international has been out of action for the majority of the season and could really use a good run out before the term comes to a close. Mohamed Salah’s Golden Boot chances are gradually slipping away, with just two matches left for him to close the four-goal deficit between him and Jamie Vardy.

The Egyptian underperformed against Arsenal last time out, making just ten accurate passes and completing one lone dribble (via Sofascore). Klopp may choose to rest Salah whilst he has the luxury to do so.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s subpar performance in midfield at his old ground will more than likely see him dropped to the bench. Naby Keita deserves a start, having contributed two assists since the league restarted.

Chelsea have a lot to fight for and will undoubtedly be fielding a strong side to try and snub the champions. Although the result doesn’t matter to Liverpool, Klopp won’t want a repeat of their spanking against Manchester City. An unchanged back four and goalkeeper option will likely be the case as they try to keep out Lampard’s clinical attack.

Brighton & Hove Albion: Potential Ben White boost for Seagulls as Leeds eye Robin Koch

Brighton’s hopes of keeping Ben White could be boosted amid reports that Leeds are looking elsewhere for defensive reinforcements.

The Yorkshire club had the 22-year-old on loan last season and recently submitted a £22m bid to sign him permanently, which the Seagulls rejected.

However, the newly-promoted Premier League side are now looking instead at a defender from the Bundesliga, with The Telegraph reporting that they are interested in Freiburg’s Robin Koch.

Koch is a twice-capped Germany international who was a mainstay of Freiburg’s defence last season, playing in all but two of their Bundesliga games as they finished just outside the European places.

According to a report from O Jogo, the the 24-year-old could be available for as little as £10.8m given the downturn in the transfer market amid the global pandemic. That is less than a third of the £35m that Brighton are reportedly demanding for White, according to Football Insider.

At the moment, the 22-year-old is among a plethora of central defensive options available to Seagulls manager Graham Potter. However, two of Albion’s more regular centre-backs have recently been linked with exits from the club.

According to The Mirror, Chelsea are reportedly willing to pay £40m to bring Lewis Dunk to Stamford Bridge. Meanwhile, the Daily Record claimed that Celtic have opened transfer talks with Shane Duffy, who has also been linked with Burnley, West Ham, West Brom and indeed Leeds.

With Dunk being Brighton’s captain and a mainstay of their defence for the past six seasons, and with Duffy being an experienced Premier League player despite playing less frequently last term compared to previous campaigns, the Seagulls face a potential central defensive cull in this transfer window.

However, with Leeds reportedly turning to Koch as a possible centre-back signing, that may lead to their interest in a permanent move for White diminishing, which would spell good news for Brighton amid the possibility of their other defenders being cherry-picked.

Also, having played every minute of the Whites’ Championship-winning 2019/20 campaign, the 22-year-old returns to the Amex Stadium with plenty of senior experience under his belt.

Sheffield Wednesday must avoid signing Lyle Taylor this January

Sheffield Wednesday’s season currently hangs in the balance.

On the pitch, Garry Monk is steering them towards a serious push for promotion in the Championship but off it, they face huge uncertainty over the long-term future of the club.

The Owls currently sit fifth in the standings following a five-match unbeaten run which was continued at the weekend with a rampant 4-0 thrashing of fellow playoff hopefuls Nottingham Forest.

Meanwhile, the south Yorkshire side are yet to face punishment following their charge by the English Football League over the sale of their Hillsborough stadium.

It is believed that their owner, Dejphon Chansiri, could face a permanent ban from the sport altogether while a 21-point deduction has been branded about as another potential consequence.

For now, all Wednesday can do it keep going until they learn their fate, and that appears to be the case with January in mind.

Next month gives Monk his first opportunity to stamp down his own mark amongst a team that was assembled wholly by his predecessors.

What do you really know about the Premier League’s greatest managers? Find out below…

One player that has been linked to the club this week is Charlton Athletic striker Lyle Taylor, while there is also reported interest in clinching Liverpool starlet Rhian Brewster on loan.

So it is reasonable to suggest that the 40-year-old could be in for a forward in a couple of weeks.

Would a move for Taylor be a right one? Absolutely not.

Sky Sports claim that the Addicks’ former owner Roland Duchatelet rejected offers of £4m for him in January, but with his contract due to expire at the end of the season, many Championship rivals are in for him.

The 29-year-old, who will turn 30 before the end of the season, had been out with a serious knee injury for quite some time before returning as a substitute against Middlesbrough.

He has since only made two further appearances from the bench having scored five goals in their opening six games.

The Owls should steer clear of him, not just because he is some way off being match fit, but too, he offers nothing different to what Monk already has in his ranks.

His current boss Lee Bowyer described him by saying: “For me, he’s a 20-goal-a-season striker no matter what division. The way we play suits him because it isn’t just his goals. His physicality, he holds the ball up.”

That sounds exactly like Steven Fletcher, who has already bagged 12 goals this campaign and also wins 6.3 aerial duels on average per game.

Wednesday simply do not need another player like this, but instead someone who can compliment him nicely.

And in other news, Sheffield Wednesday striker Jordan Rhodes is ‘on the radar’ this January, according to Alan Nixon…

Tottenham Hotspur: Jose Mourinho dubs Spurs bust-up as "beautiful", fans should be delighted [Opinion]

Tottenham edged past Everton to hand Jose Mourinho his 200th Premier League victory.

Spurs captain Hugo Lloris and Son Heung-min had to be separated after tempers flared between the teammates as they left the field at half-time. The clash was perhaps the most exciting talking point in a fairly dull game as Michael Keane deflected Giovani Lo Celso’s strike into his own net for the only goal.

While Spurs have now leapfrogged Sheffield United into eighth in the table after beating the Toffees at home, the duo made plenty of headlines for their heated exchange. The pair subsequently settled their differences as they embraced before leaving the pitch after the final whistle.

Jose Mourinho dubbed the bust-up as “beautiful” and shared some insight into the incident after the game. He told Sky Sports: “It’s beautiful.  It’s a consequence, probably, of our meetings. If you want to blame somebody for that, it’s me.

“I was critical of my boys because they are not in my opinion critical enough with themselves, I asked them to demand more from others, I asked them to put their colleagues under the pressure of the team spirit you have to give.”

“It was a situation where an amazing kid, who everybody loves, Sonny, the captain [Lloris] thought he had to do more for the team and give a different effort.”

“There were a couple of bad words, but I think it was something very important for the team to grow up, for that to happen you need to demand more of each other and be strong personalities. At half-time, I said when I saw the reaction I had no doubts they would stick together until the end.”

Speaking after the game, Lloris admitted that he was unhappy with Son’s defending after Richarlison came close to scoring before the break.

He said: “It just belongs to the changing room. Outside you can say whatever you want. There is a lot of respect between all the players. What happened between me and Son is just something that is part of football sometimes, but there is no problem at all.”

It is difficult to disagree with Mourinho, as it is about time Spurs showed some grit and determination. Tottenham have conceded more goals than Premier League champions Liverpool, Manchester United and Sheffield United so far.

While it wasn’t the nicest thing to watch on TV, as Alasdair Gold notes, it showed that the players care and will to try and get the best out of each other by any means necessary.

The manager has previously insisted that his side need to show more passion and must be mentally prepared for the challenges that lie ahead. The spat shows that Lloris and Son are willing to go the extra mile as they are not afraid to voice their opinions.

After Spurs slumped to a disappointing defeat at Sheffield United, Mourinho feared the worst, although fans should be delighted by this spirited display on the pitch. Make no mistake, Mourinho still has a lot of work left to do if his team are to push for the top four, but this is a good step in the right direction.

Tottenham have never really had any problem scoring goals, although heavy defeats to the Blades and RB Leipzig either side of lockdown exposed lingering problems at the back. However, they didn’t concede at all against Everton, which led to Carlo Ancelotti sheepishly admitting that Spurs “defended really well.”

Spurs face an uphill struggle to qualify for the Champions League, as they are currently eighth in the table, nine points behind fourth-placed Chelsea, with only five games remaining. Therefore, Mourinho will need his side to be at his very best if they are to close the gap on the top four, but at least the exchange between Lloris and Son shows a hunger to put things right over the coming weeks.

Tottenham fans, did you like Hugo Lloris and Son Heung-min’s heated exchange? Let us know in the comments below!

Arsenal fans slam Shkodran Mustafi’s display against Norwich

It is now eight games without a victory for Arsenal, and it seems that Unai Emery’s departure has changed very little.

The former Sevilla boss was relieved of his duties with the Gunners earlier in the week, and Freddie Ljungberg is the man who was tasked with trying to end the north-London outfit’s disappointing run on Sunday. Unfortunately, his team could only muster up a 2-2 draw at Carrow Road against Norwich.

Again, defensively, there were plenty of issues, and 20-time Germany international Shokdran Mustafi will have to take his share of the blame considering he started in the heart of the defence. In all fairness, that was his first taste of Premier League football of the campaign, and it showed.

Often lambasted in the past by portions of the club’s fanbase, they were particularly scathing once again here. They took to Twitter to share their thoughts, and you can see some of the best comments from the social media platform below.

Man Utd’s big-six record proves Solskjaer has no excuse for top-four failure

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

16 Premier League games played this season, and already 22 points off league leaders and arch-rivals Liverpool. On the face of it, Manchester United have endured a pretty disappointing campaign so far, but when looking at where their points have been won and lost, it becomes just that more eye-brow raising.

After a glorious week in which the Red Devils pulled off superb victories against Tottenham and Manchester City, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are back in the hunt for a top-four place. They now find themselves just five points off Chelsea who currently occupy that final qualifying spot for the Champions League. They are very much in the race to return to the glitz and glamour of European football’s elite competition, and that has largely been thanks to their sensational record against the big-six under their Norwegian manager.

The United legend has been in charge of 13 games against the league’s fellow top sides, and he has masterminded an impressive seven victories in them. The Red Devils have tasted defeat just twice in those contests, both of them coming against Arsenal and City last season. As well as his impressive win ratio in these fixtures, Solskjaer has also ensured his team are hard to break down, conceding just 11 times.

So just how is it possible that the side still find themselves out of the top four at the moment? The notion always used to be that games against your rivals would often dictate where you finish, but the way the Manchester side are currently going, it is their results against the division’s lesser lights that could threaten to spoil their party this season. Damaging defeats to the likes of Crystal Palace and Newcastle have ensured there is still a major question mark over whether they can return to the Champions League for next year.

No clues: Can you name the Man Utd result purely based on these images? Give it a go now…

The fact that Solskjaer appears to have sussed out how to pick up valuable points in his side’s most difficult fixtures whether it be home or away means he has no excuse whatsoever not to guide United into the top four. Games against ‘easier’ opposition should be a virtual guarantee of three points for the Red Devils, whilst any kind of result against their fellow big-six should be seen as a bonus. Instead, the opposite is seemingly true for them. If the Norwegian boss can’t figure out a way to rectify that, then their failure will really be on his shoulders.

Meanwhile, Manchester United fans laud this ace after his monstrous display against Manchester City.

Dele Alli display splits the Tottenham supporters

Well, it would be fair to say that there were some mixed opinions from the Tottenham Hotspur fans when it came to Dele Alli’s performance against Red Star Belgrade. The England international was replaced just past the hour of the Champions League match, which Spurs won 4-0 in extremely comfortable fashion. The 23-year-old actually set up Son Heung-min for the away side’s second goal of the night, sliding a clever pass into his teammate who made no mistake as he struck high into the net.Which North London club is facing the biggest crisis at the moment? Decide for yourself by watching the video below…According to WhoScored, as well as the assist, the former MK Dons youngster boasted a pass success rate of 92%, whilst he also won one tackle. There were a lot of Spurs fans who were pleased with what they saw from the attacking midfielder during the European clash. However, that was not an opinion shared by everyone as many others were once again left underwhelmed by his performance.A selection of the Twitter reaction is available to view below:
