Joe Clarke century carries the fight for table-toppers but in vain

An excellent team bowling effort and a vital fifty from Colin Ackermann helped Durham pick up a magnificent seven-wicket win against Nottinghamshire in the Rothesay County Championship, despite a brilliant century from Joe Clarke. It was Durham’s morning as the hosts picked up three of the nine wickets they needed including the vital scalp of Ben Slater, who made 74, which was his second half-century of the match. However, Clarke counter-attacked either side of lunch and managed to take his side into the lead before notching up his first hundred of the season. There was a late twist though as Durham’s bowling attack, led excellently by Ben Raine, roared back after tea and picked up five wickets to bowl Nottinghamshire out for 347.Durham had 18 overs to get the 91 runs needed for the win and the chase got off to a dramatic start as the hosts lost two wickets at the hands of Mohammad Abbas, but the experienced head of Ackermann saw them home. The win sees Durham move up to fourth in Division One and are just 16 points behind their opponents at the top of a congested table, while Surrey are now breathing down Nottinghamshire’s neck, as the gap at the top is just three points heading into the final game of the current block of fixtures.Slater and nightwatcher Rob Lord resumed on 67 for one, still 190 behind Durham, and their aim was to bat out the day in order to keep their unbeaten record intact. Durham got their much-needed ealy wicket as they got Lord for 15 as he edged a James Minto ball straight to Ben McKinney in the slips. The hosts got their third soon after as Brydon Carse bowled Freddie McCann for six with one that clipped the off-stump.Slater remained at the crease and he passed fifty for the second time in the match from 69 balls. He then utilised the pace of Carse as he carved one to the boundary. The Nottinghamshire opener continued to play nicely, but he was the next man to fall as he was caught behind from a Codi Yusuf delivery for a well-made 74.Joe Clarke was joined in the middle by Jack Haynes and the former looked good as he smashed a Raine delivery to the offside boundary.Clarke then continued to take chunks out of the hosts’ lead with a lovely shot for four past third man region just before lunch.Clarke and Haynes combined for a fifty partnership and the former passed fifty for the first time this season from a rapid 58 balls.Haynes was very much a foil for Clarke’s aggression, but he departed for 24 as George Drissell got him LBW to leave Clarke needing a bit of a hand. He was very nearly out himself as a short ball from Carse was hooked towards fine leg, but Yusuf failed to take the catch with the Nottinghamshire man on 61.South African international Kyle Verreynne produced a delightful drive through the covers for four, which took his side into the lead.Durham’s chances of a win were seemingly slipping away as Verryenne continued to be positive, while Clarke looked composed. However they got a much-needed breakthrough, as Verreynne, who had looked comfortable, was then caught behind from the first ball after tea as Drissell coaxed an edge from the South African who had to depart for 38.Clarke then reached his 25th First Class century from 140 balls, but another wicket fell as Lyndon James was caught behind off the bowling of Ackermann for a duck.Durham’s excellent session continued as Raine bowled Liam Patterson-White for three and he then struck again to bowl Brett Hutton for a duck.Clarke’s excellent knock of 119 ended as he chopped on from a Yusuf delivery, setting Durham a target of 91 from 18 overs. There was more drama though, as McKinney was bowled by Abbas for a first ball duck and Emilio Gay was caught behind from the same bowler. Hutton built the pressure with a series of dots, but Ackermann plundered an Abbas ball to the boundary. The Netherlands international then clubbed an Abbas ball to the boundary to take his side within 50 and he followed that up with a lovely cover drive for four from a Patterson-White ball.Ackermann, who passed fifty, took Durham to their target, with Carse hitting the winning runs with 10 balls to spare.

Arsenal battling Tottenham to sign "exceptional" £87k-a-week Real Madrid star

Arsenal are now battling Tottenham Hotspur for the signature of a Real Madrid star, with both clubs conducting scouting missions.

Gunners battling Tottenham and Newcastle for new attacker

The Gunners made major improvements to their already fearsome attack during the summer transfer window, bringing in the likes of Eberechi Eze, Noni Madueke and Viktor Gyokeres, with the Swedish striker making an impressive start to life in north London.

Having pushed Liverpool and Manchester City close over the past three seasons, Mikel Arteta’s side clearly have the quality to end their long wait for a Premier League title, and the manager’s tactics are arguably the main thing holding them back.

After the 1-1 draw against Manchester City, Gary Neville criticised Arteta for his cautious approach to the game, saying: “He could have been more attacking at Anfield and he wasn’t and certainly against City from the start he could have been more attacking.”

As such, Arteta adopting a more attacking mindset may be the key to the Gunners winning the league, but there has also now been a suggestion that the manager remains keen on improving his options in forward areas.

According to a report from Caught Offside, Arsenal are now battling Tottenham and Newcastle for the signature of Real Madrid star Arda Guler, who has emerged as a crucial player since the arrival of Xabi Alonso as manager.

Consequently, the Spanish giants have no desire to cash in on Guler, but that hardline stance hasn’t halted the interest from elsewhere, with the Gunners sending scouts to watch the attacking midfielder in action in La Liga.

With Madrid expressing no interest in selling the 20-year-old, who is focused on his future at the club, it remains to be seen whether a deal is possible, but there is certainly interest on the north Londoners’ behalf.

After a solid, if not spectacular, first season in Spain, during which the youngster picked up eight La Liga goal contributions, he has really started to find his form this season, picking up three goals and three assists in the opening seven matches.

The Turkey international is particularly adept at setting up chances for his teammates, while he is also an impressive passer of the ball, and strong at winning back possession.

Jose Mourinho has been left particularly impressed with the £87k-a-week starlet in the past, describing him as “exceptional”, and he clearly has the ability to succeed at the Emirates Stadium, having established himself as a key player for Real Madrid.

That said, it will not be too disappointing if Arsenal miss out, given that they are already blessed with options in attacking midfield, having signed Eze in the summer.

Gill embraces clarity, security and comfort as he gets ready for Test captaincy

“What I like is communication with the players, making the players feel secure, talking to them, giving them comfort around their weaknesses and strengths”

Gill: Difficult to fill Rohit-Kohli void but it’s no additional pressure

Shubman Gill was clear in his communication. He looked comfortable and snug sitting next to the strong-headed Gautam Gambhir, the head coach, and secure and confident, no matter what kind of questions were thrown at him. He faced the media for the first time in his role as India’s new Test captain. The qualities Gill exhibited on the same stage where chief selector Ajit Agarkar announced him as Rohit Sharma’s successor less than two weeks ago are exactly what he wishes to carry into the dressing room for the five-Test tour of England: clarity and security.Related

Gill must now chart his own path

“There is no particular style of captaincy that I want to follow,” Gill said in Mumbai when asked about his idea of Test captaincy. “The more you play, the more experience you get. I think your personal style is more visible to the people. What I like is communication with the players, making the players feel secure, talking to them, giving them comfort around their weaknesses and strengths. There are many such things…forming a bond with the players is very important. If you are a captain of any team or a leader of any team, if your players feel very secure, only then they can give their 100%.”I have played under some amazing and terrific leaders. Rohit was very clear with his communication from what he wanted from the players. That was his great quality which I would want to inherit from him.”So as a leader, as a captain, you definitely want to be able to lead by example, by your performance and any match that you play.”Shubman Gill addressed his first press conference as India’s new Test captain•AFP/Getty Images

Gill, at 25, has been handed the “great challenge” in his own words, of starting his captaincy journey with a “big tour” of England, especially after India suffered forgettable series losses – first at home to New Zealand and then away against Australia – that cost them a place in the World Test Championship (WTC) final. Gill said he was “quite overwhelmed” when he learnt about the selectors’ decision to make him the captain, which would make him India’s fifth-youngest Test leader, and the youngest since Ravi Shastri, who was some days younger when he took over in early 1988, although only for one Test at home. As well-thought out and smooth Gill’s answers were on Thursday evening, the start of almost each one of them with “sir” served as a reminder of his tender age.”There is pressure on every tour,” Gill said, playing down the magnitude of the series that will start the new WTC cycle for India and England. “It’s tough to fill the gaps left by the experienced players who won us so many matches over the years. But there’s no different pressure as such. There’s pressure in every series and all the players are used to playing and trying to win under pressure. I think the combination of batting and bowling in our team is a very good mix of experience and talent.”Gill further explained the management had not decided on the team’s batting line-up, which would be firmed in the lead-up to the first Test starting June 20, after the preparations start in and around London. His batting position and Kohli’s successor at No. 4 remain a mystery.”We haven’t really decided on the [batting order], we still have some time,” he said. “We will be playing an intra-squad match [from June 13 to 16] and I think we will be having a 10-day camp in London. So we still have a little bit of time and I think we can decide on the batting order once we go there.”Shubman Gill: ‘Rohit was very clear with his communication from what he wanted from the players. That was his great quality which I would want to inherit from him’•AFP/Getty Images

India called up the uncapped top-order batter B Sai Sudharsan, handed a berth to 33-year-old Karun Nair, who last played a Test over eight years ago, and retained Abhimanyu Easwaran in their 18-member squad. Among allrounders, they picked Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar and Shardul Thakur apart from the proven name in Ravindra Jadeja, making it a mix of two spinners and two fast bowlers among them. Gambhir said the look of the final XI will depend on a few different factors.”It’s not just the conditions of the ground that are different [from India], overheard conditions also matter,” Gambhir said. “So after considering everything, the best playing XI will be selected [depending on] who can give us a result, whether it is a spin-bowling allrounder or a seam-bowling allrounder. So it’s not just by looking at one or two things, we have options. And more importantly, Test matches are won when you take 20 wickets. Even if you score a thousand runs, there is no guarantee of winning. But if you take 20 wickets, then you are more or less in a position where you can win a Test match.”A big factor that could also prove pivotal in India picking 20 wickets will be England’s aggressive style of play – popularly called Bazball – which they have adopted under head coach Brendon McCullum. That modus operandi is a two-edged sword that helped them race to a score like 427 for 6 in just over 80 overs against New Zealand in early December for a massive win and also led to a collapse of 143 all out barely 10 days later for the opposite result in Hamilton. Like Jasprit Bumrah told the early last year before the home Tests against England, Bazball could lead to “heaps of wickets”, Gill further said on Thursday it does give the opponents “an opportunity”.”Yes, they play a certain way,” Gill said. “I think we saw that when they came to India as well. But I think it’s very exciting for us, it gives us an opportunity, and I think it’s a great challenge. If we are very proactive with our execution and if we are proactive with our plans, I think it would put them under pressure immensely.”In ODIs and T20Is India still top the ICC rankings, led by captains who are 38 and 34 respectively. With the next WTC final still two years away, a lot rests on the unburdened shoulders of Gill, who will be only 27 by the time the next cycle ends.

Arsenal’s forgotten "game-changer" can be as explosive as any new signing

The team with the “best squad” in the Premier League, according to Jamie Carragher, Arsenal’s time to end more than 20 years of hurt could finally be here.

Reigning champions Liverpool – in the midst of a three-game losing run across all fronts – have yet to find their feet this season, while not even Erling Haaland can help Manchester City recapture their former magic.

The sense of now or never for Mikel Arteta may be a touch of hyperbole, although the Spaniard does appear to have all the tools at his disposal to be able to steer the Gunners to title glory.

With two and in some cases three genuine options in each position, following an effective summer of recruitment, the north Londoners are now a force to be reckoned with again.

Boasting the division’s meanest defence – with just three goals conceded – Arteta’s men also only rank behind Man City for goals scored (14 vs 15).

This side certainly isn’t perfect, however, with there those waiting in the wings who could perhaps take them to even greater heights.

Latest on Arsenal’s injury situation

The sight of captain Martin Odegaard trudging off against West Ham United last time out has sadly become a familiar one, with the playmaking Norwegian having been replaced inside 30 minutes on three separate occasions this season.

That knee issue could see the former Real Madrid man sidelined for a significant period, adding further frustration for Arteta after losing new signing Noni Madueke to his own spell on the sidelines last month.

Madueke’s bright start to the campaign was halted by his own knee-related setback late in September, with the England international facing six to eight weeks on the sidelines.

That has seen the fleet-footed winger join another ex-Chelsea man, Kai Havertz, on the treatment table, with the German yet to be seen this season after undergoing knee surgery ahead of the start of the new campaign.

Absent for much of 2024/25 too, albeit while netting 15 times in all competitions, Havertz is expected to make his return at some stage in November, with Arteta currently limited with regard to Viktor Gyokeres alternatives through the middle.

It will be an interesting debate as to who the Arsenal boss will favour to lead the line upon Havertz’s return to action, with Carragher predicting that it will be the latter man – instead of Gyokeres – who gets the nod for “the biggest games”.

Fellow absentee, Gabriel Jesus, hardly factors into the equation with regard to the competition in the number nine role, although might the Brazilian prove to be the perfect solution on the left flank?

Why Arsenal’s forgotten man can soon explode

Cast your mind back to August 2022, as a new-look Arsenal side secured a richly-deserved 2-0 win over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Turning out in that eye-catching pink kit, the long awaited debut of William Saliba was no doubt the headline act, although Jesus’ own first Gunners outing more than caught the attention.

In truth, the former Manchester City man was simply “electric” on the day, as noted by Gary Neville at the time, putting in a “magical” first performance following his £45m switch from the Etihad.

Unfortunately, such displays have been few and far between, with Jesus repeatedly struck down by injury in the years since, scoring just 26 goals in 96 games in all – albeit while contributing a further 20 assists.

Injury has no doubt played its part, although perhaps Arteta has yet to get the best out of him, with much of the forward’s best work under Pep Guardiola having come from the flanks.

Indeed, the man previously lauded as a “game-changer” by Alan Shearer recorded 14 goals and assists in just 20 games as a right-winger in Manchester, as well as ten goal involvements in 19 games off the left, as per Transfermarkt.

It is in that latter role where the 28-year-old could well find a home for himself this season, with neither Leandro Trossard nor Gabriel Martinelli yet to properly cement that starting berth, while Eberechi Eze is likely to take up Odegaard’s role more centrally.

Now back on the grass as he steps up his recovery from his ACL blow, Jesus’ return may not come in the immediate future, although he could well prove to be like a new signing for Arteta as the season progresses.

A man with 149 goals and 73 assists in 415 career games at senior level, the 64-cap Brazil international is too good a talent to write off just yet, even if reports suggest that he could be moved on in January.

Fleet of foot and a relentless presser at his best, Jesus still ranks among the top 6% of European forwards for successful take-ons per 90, as well as in the top 3% for tackles made per 90, as FBref, emphasising just what an asset he can be both in and out of possession.

While many at Arsenal may be enthralled by the new faces such as Eze, Gyokeres and Madueke, it would be no surprise if Jesus was able to explode back onto the scene when back fit and firing again.

Tottenham now in pole position to sign "game-changing" forward amid £100m ENIC injection

Tottenham have emerged as favourites to sign a “game-changing” forward as the Lewis family make their sporting intentions for Spurs clear this week, having pumped £100 million worth of capital into the club.

Tottenham given £100m cash boost after Lewis family injection

On Thursday, the Lilywhites made an official announcement of their owners’ call to back the club with fresh funding, with Thomas Frank’s side receiving nine figures which will be spent on the day-to-day running of Spurs.

CEO Vinai Venkatesham, alongside new non-executive chairman Peter Charrington, will now decide where specifically this new money will be invested — and some of this cash may well go into their transfer planning.

Tottenham Hotspur chairman DanielLevyand Tottenham Hotspur CEO Vinai Venkatesham

Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol shared news last month that the Lewis family were planning to inject funds into Tottenham, and suggested that these finances could be reinvested into their recruitment drive.

With January on the horizon, Frank may well be backed with key reinforcements, amid reports that the North Londoners want to sign a new centre-back and winger (TEAMtalk).

Tottenham missed out on a deal for Man City winger Savinho in the summer after having two bids rejected, and he’s since put pen to paper on a contract extension at Eastlands running until 2031.

Spurs are also admirers of Brentford captain Nathan Collins, Franks’ former star at the Gtech Community Stadium, amid their pursuit of new defensive options.

Given the Lilywhites club-record signing Dominic Solanke has proved unreliable when it comes to fitness since his £65 million move from Bournemouth last year, not to mention doubts surrounding Richarlison, it is reported elsewhere that Tottenham could even bring in another number nine.

Frank has reportedly contacted former Brentford star Ivan Toney about the possibility of a loan move to Tottenham in January, but while this is yet to be backed up by reliable media sources, it is clear that Vasco de Gama sensation, Rayan, is on their radar.

Tottenham in pole position to sign Vasco de Gama star Rayan

Multiple reports from South America in the last month have claimed that Tottenham could open talks for Rayan, who’s just become the youngest Vasco player to reach 10 Brazilian top flight goals since Dinamite in 1973.

The highly-rated teenager is one of Brazil’s rising stars right now, scoring 14 goals in all competitions this season, and his contract is rumoured to contain a tantalising £35 million release clause.

Rayan’s deal also expires in December 2026, meaning he can agree a pre-contract in July, and Vasco chiefs are working to protect themselves by agreeing a new contract to raise his exit clause, potentially to as high as £52 million.

That is according to journalist Jorge Nicola, who reports that Tottenham are currently in pole position to sign Rayan and are prepared to bid around £26 million as things stand, which would apparently meet Vasco’s expected price.

Aston Villa, Barcelona, Chelsea, Brighton, Porto, Fiorentina, Zenit and even Nottingham Forest have also been linked with the 19-year-old, so he’s currently a man in demand, with the possibility of an auction also there.

Vasco boss Fernando Diniz has lavished the right-winger’s incredible potential already, calling him a “very rare” breed of player.
