Lanka Premier League to be played from July 31 to August 22

Sri Lanka’s T20 league to be held in its original window for the first time

Jaffna Kings have won all three seasons of the LPL so far•SLC

The fourth edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) will take place from July 31 to August 22 this year, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has confirmed. If it goes ahead as planned, this will be the first LPL season held in its originally scheduled July-August window.Similar to last year, the five-team tournament will take place at three venues, likely to be Hambantota, Colombo and Kandy, with each squad comprising a maximum of 20 players – 14 local and six overseas players. The Jaffna Kings have won all three editions of the tournament so far.”We have decided to hold the tournament during July and August this year, as conducting the tournament during this period gives us the best possible opportunity to attract top international talent and also suits well with Sri Lanka’s international cricket calendar,” LPL tournament director Samantha Dodanwela said. However, the Major League Cricket tournament in the USA is set to run from July 13 to 30, and the Hundred in England is scheduled between August 1 and 27, and both those tournaments could impact overseas player availability in the LPL.All three previous editions of the LPL had been postponed to November-December, having initially been slated for a July-August window. The inaugural edition in 2020 was impacted by strict Covid-19 restrictions in Sri Lanka at the time; in 2021, an increase in coronavirus cases combined with an unavailability of foreign stars due to scheduling clashes with other franchise leagues saw the tournament pushed to the end of the year; while last year, Sri Lanka was in the midst of a full blown economic crisis.

Karun Nair replaces injured KL Rahul at Lucknow Super Giants

Rahul, LSG’s captain, was ruled out of the remainder of the tournament as well as the WTC final after picking up a thigh injury

Lucknow Super Giants have drafted in Karun Nair as a replacement for KL Rahul for the remainder of IPL 2023. Nair comes on board for INR 50 lakh.Rahul, the LSG captain, was ruled out of the IPL as well as India’s World Test Championship final against Australia in early June after picking up a thigh injury while fielding in the game against Royal Challengers Bangalore on May 1.Nair has scored 1496 runs in 76 IPL games over the years, turning out for Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals), Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals and RCB. LSG will be the third franchise he will play for in three seasons.Nair is among the more experienced India players who went unsold at the auction, having not played any form of professional cricket during the 2022-23 season after being dropped from the Karnataka squad altogether. He was earlier in consideration to be drafted into the RCB squad as a replacement for David Willey, but they eventually picked Kedar Jadhav.Nair and Rahul have been longtime colleagues in the Karnataka side in India’s domestic circuit.”Absolutely gutted,” Rahul wrote in an Instagram post on Friday morning as he announced that he would be out of action for the coming few months.”My focus will be on my rehabilitation and recovery in the coming weeks,” Rahul’s post said. “It’s a tough call to make, but I know it’s the right one to ensure a full recovery.”Rahul tore a tendon in his right thigh while chasing a ball in the second over of their match against RCB. He had to be helped off the field at that point, and did not return until a chase of 127 got tense. He walked out to bat at No. 11 in the hope of winning the game. But he was unable to run between the wickets, which resulted in the No. 9 Amit Mishra facing the last over. LSG eventually lost by 18 runs.”As the team captain, it pains me deeply not to be able to be there during this crucial period,” Rahul wrote. “But, I’m confident that the boys will rise to the occasion and give their best performance as always.”LSG are currently in second place on the IPL points table, with five wins from ten games. Their push for a second straight playoff appearance will now be spearheaded by Krunal Pandya, who takes over the captaincy on an interim basis. He has already led the team in one game, against Chennai Super Kings, although it was washed out. This is the second major injury Rahul’s had in two years following a sports hernia in 2022 for which he needed surgery.”The last few days have been really hard, but I’m determined to come out on top,” his post said. “Injuries are never easy, but I’ll give it my all as always. Thank you for all the support and good wishes.”Rahul’s career has had a rough time in recent times. India took away his vice-captaincy and dropped him from their Test XI after the first two Border-Gavaskar Trophy matches in February 2023. And he hasn’t played a T20I for them in almost a year. It’s only in 50-overs cricket that he commands a spot in the team, where he also doubles up as their wicketkeeper. All of this was reflected in his moving down from Grade A to B when the BCCI handed out central contracts two months ago.

Tammy Beaumont rides luck to realise her 2005 dream with Ashes Test ton

England opener survived a non-review on 61 to finish second day unbeaten on 100

Valkerie Baynes23-Jun-2023″Just pump your legs fast… and if you have to dive, dive.” That’s all Tammy Beaumont told herself as she sprinted for a second run that would take her to a maiden Test century in the penultimate over of a tough but hugely rewarding day.She had spent a day-and-a-half fielding, mostly at close quarters, as Australia reached a massive first-innings 473 before becoming only the second woman behind Heather Knight, her captain and batting partner for a large part of her knock, to score a hundred in all three international formats.Unbeaten on 100 at the close, Beaumont also had the satisfaction of keeping her side in an Ashes Test that looked to be headed firmly Australia’s way earlier on the second day. And she said she was no stranger to close encounters when big milestones presented themselves.”I think I should have been run out in my first ODI hundred,” Beaumont said. “I should have been run out on 99 hitting it straight to a fielder and running. For me, there was an opportunity there and it was probably the fastest one I ran in the day but hey, who cares? I’m in.”I knew I could get there. I knew it was going to go my end and I had a good chance of getting there. If I don’t dive in then you know I don’t think I’m close. I’m pretty much an idiot, always got grazes on my elbows because I’m always on the floor, but if it’s not tight I don’t dive.”Tammy Beaumont scored her maiden Test century•Getty Images

Beaumont’s innings, which included a century stand with Knight and an unbroken 67-run partnership for the third wicket with Nat Sciver-Brunt, helped England to 218 for 2 on a batting friendly surface at Trent Bridge with their opener in fine touch, having scored 201 not out in last week’s warm-up match.England still trail by 255 and Beaumont said the end result would ultimately determine where this innings ranked in her international career, which began in 2009 and now spans 210 matches across formats.”It feels pretty good,” said Beaumont, who a year ago lost her place in England’s T20 side for the Commonwealth Games and T20 World Cup. “There were probably moments where I thought I wasn’t going to face enough balls to get there tonight it’s put the team in a good position going into tomorrow so hopefully we can bat long tomorrow and that’s what it’s all about at the minute.”For me, it’s all about whether I contribute to the team so if we win this Test match and we go on to win, I think it will be right up there. Let’s wait and see. It’s great to tick it off and yes, as a kid, I dreamt of scoring an Ashes Test hundred. Pretty much since 2005, that probably has been my goal but as I’ve gone on, for me, it’s about contributing to the team.”

She enjoyed a stroke of luck on 61 when she hit legspinner Alana King into her boot and the ball hooped to Phoebe Litchfield at short leg, but the catch wasn’t awarded and Australia didn’t review.”I knew I hit it, I knew it hit my foot, I didn’t know if it hit the floor as well,” Beaumont said. “But not my decision to make and not mine to overturn or anything like that. I think it’s hard to tell when it hits your foot whether it’s also hit the ground at the same time. So I guess I got lucky with one. But then again, I’ve probably had a couple of unlucky decisions in the last month or so in regional cricket, so I guess the luck came at the right time.”Knight admitted Beaumont “had got away with one” but was impressed with her opener’s performance, which she described as “really powerful”.”I thought, ‘Oh, that’s close.’ I chatted to Tammy in the middle and she was like, ‘Yeah, I was out,'” Knight told Sky Sports. “She’s got tiny feet as well, I don’t know how she’s managed to hit that up. But yeah, obviously they didn’t review it and Tammy got away with one there.”I’m pretty sure she was desperate to get it [her hundred] before the end of play… really proud of her. It’s hard work being out in the field for so long but I think the concentration and the skill level that she showed was outstanding.”Related

Annabel Sutherland, who scored an unbeaten 137 for Australia off the back of another century in a warm-up against England A, made a case for promotion from No.8, although she was happy to slot in wherever required as part of “a pretty solid lineup”.”It’s pretty special,” Sutherland said. “I’m not sure it’s quite sunk in yet. “It’s something you dream of growing up, just to pull on the Baggy Green, but to do that job for the team yesterday and today it was pretty cool and I had great support at the other end. The main thing was just getting in there and spending time out there, that was what was required for the team and I was just happy to play my part.”Tammy and Nat in particular batted exceptionally well but in saying that we created seven or eight chances, so I think given we’re 260 ahead, still well and truly ahead in the game. If we can we can start well tomorrow morning then that’ll put us in good stead and hopefully we can sharpen up a little bit in the field so we can take those chances. You never know, there’s still three days to go and lots of time in the game.”

Cricket Scotland facing new crisis as independent report slams sexist culture

Publication of McKinney Report comes two years after exposure of institutional racism

Cricket Scotland is facing a fresh crisis following the publication of a damning new report that calls into question the organisation’s culture and attitude towards women. The McKinney Report, an independent neutral assessment carried out by a leading Scottish HR firm, found a “high degree of prejudice towards female staff and players” within Cricket Scotland, adding that “antiquated attitudes and behaviour towards women in the game are still prevalent, particularly at club level”.The 35-page report, published on Monday, comes just two years after Cricket Scotland was found to be institutionally racist by another independent review – entitled “Changing The Boundaries” and carried out by Plan4Sport – in July 2022.That document, which found 448 separate examples of racism and discrimination within Scottish cricket, led to the entire Cricket Scotland board resigning on the eve of its publication. The McKinney report analysed behaviours, cultures and practices within Cricket Scotland, both prior to the publication of the Changing the Boundaries report in 2022, and in the two years since. Its six key themes covered culture and inclusion, leadership, general behaviours, employment practices and wellbeing, psychological safety and sexism and misogyny.Nine recommendations have been developed, with its priorities centred around general behaviours, and sexism and misogyny.Trudy Lindblade, Cricket Scotland’s CEO, said: “This report is a damning indictment of the treatment of female players and staff within our organisation. It is evident that Cricket Scotland allowed behaviours to take place that were disrespectful, demeaning and deeply concerning, and that these were allowed to continue for a significant period.”This is completely unacceptable, and I wholeheartedly apologise to every single person who was affected and let down by the governing body.”This report also highlights the huge amount of work that we need to do throughout cricket in Scotland to improve the standing of women and girls within our sport.”We are committed to making the governing body and our sport welcoming and safe for all women and girls, and together with our regional associations and clubs we will work collectively to ensure there is no place for misogyny, sexism, or discrimination of any kind within our sport. Our new strategy, which is to be released shortly, will put the health and growth of women and girls’ cricket at its forefront.”Several of the recommendations from the McKinney Report are already underway, but there is still a significant amount of work to be done by Cricket Scotland, our regions, and our clubs to affect the change that is needed.”Cricket Scotland now has a robust disciplinary and complaints process in place, and I would strongly urge anyone who has been affected by the findings of the report and who feels they need to raise a complaint to use this process. These recently established processes demonstrate that Cricket Scotland is capable of handling matters in a transparent and considered manner.”

Steven Smith has been confirmed as a signing for Major League Cricket (MLC) franchise Washington Freedom ahead of the second season of the tournament which begins on July 4. The move had been widely tipped, with Smith having signed as a brand ambassador for Freedom last year, and with Australia’s international schedule allowing a clear window for him to participate through July.New South Wales (NSW), Smith’s domestic team in Australia, have a high-performance partnership with Freedom, although NSW coach Greg Shipperd was replaced by Ricky Ponting in February.”I’m super excited about joining the Washington Freedom for season two of the MLC,” Smith said in a video posted on the Freedom’s social media channels. “I can’t wait to meet all of my new team-mates and play in front of some incredible crowds in America. I’m also really looking forward to working with Ricky Ponting again, and his amazing staff.” Freedom recently announced the signing of Rachin Ravindra, the New Zealand allrounder. They retained two overseas players from the 2023 season in Marco Jansen and Akeal Hosein.Smith, who owns an apartment in New York, has previously said it would be “pretty cool” to play in the USA.However, he faces a fight to earn a spot in Australia’s final 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup, which will be held in June, having been unable to play much T20 cricket in recent times. Since his prolific return to the BBL for Sydney Sixers in the 2022-23 season, where he made 346 runs at a strike rate of 174.74, Smith has played two T20Is in India, two matches in last season’s BBL and as many games against New Zealand in February, where he made 11 and 4 while opening the batting. But after the New Zealand series, he said he was relaxed about whichever way the selection call for the T20 World Cup fell, with Australia having to name their initial squad by May 1.Related

£10m Wolves player who Pereira has praised now wants to leave Molineux

A Wolverhampton Wanderers player who has been praised by Vitor Pereira recently is looking to leave Molineux this summer, it has been claimed.

Wolves transfer rumours as Pereira plans for 2025/26

The Old Gold are on course to remain in the Premier League after a crucial come-from-behind win over relegation rivals Ipswich Town last time out.

Goals from Pablo Sarabia and Jorgen Strand Larsen took Wolves to 32 points after 31 games – 12 clear of Ipswich in 17th.

Talking after the victory, Pereira said: “I’m very happy for the club, the supporters and the team because we deserved it. Today they scored first, but we had some chances. In the second half, we increased our level and we started to feel we came here to win. It’s not time to wait, it’s time to play, press them and win the game. I was very happy with that.

“I don’t care if we lose, I just want my team pressing and putting more pace on the ball and changing one or two things. It’s a result because we played with quality in second half, creating opportunities.”

Over the last few weeks, there have been numerous transfer rumours coming out of Molineux as Pereira and co plan for his first full season in charge in the Midlands.

Reports have claimed that West Brom star Grady Diangana would be open to joining Wolves, whereas another winger in Jadon Sancho is also of interest to the Old Gold.

More goals than Cunha: Wolves now plotting swoop to sign "superb" new star

He could replace Cunha…

ByTom Cunningham Apr 5, 2025

Contact has been made by Wolves over a deal for Sancho, however, with incomings, there is also expected to be outgoings. Fabio Silva could be one who leaves on a permanent basis, with Wolves wanting £25m to sanction a full-time exit.

Sam Johnstone looking to leave Wolves this summer

Now, according to The Telegraph, relayed by Molineux News, goalkeeper Sam Johnstone is eyeing a move away from Wolves over the coming months.

Signing a new goalkeeper is a priority for Wolves and Pereira, with Johnstone keen to exit after arriving for £10m last summer.

The 32-year-old has made just 10 appearances this season keeping one clean sheet in the process. However, Johnstone has come in for praise from Pereira recently, who said he was “very happy” with the shot-stopper.

“He’s competing with Sa, Daniel, and King. He’s competing every day. He plays at a good level with his feet. For me, it’s important.

“He’s a goalkeeper that can control the space in the back of the defensive line. He has good skills on the goal, good skills outside to control the crosses. He’s a good goalkeeper.

“We have four good goalkeepers. Very hard workers. With the personality to be leaders and to help everybody in the club. I’m very happy with them.”

Now, it seems as if a move away from the Midlands for Johnstone is one to keep an eye on.

Imagine him & Marmoush: Man City must play ace who "plays like a superstar"

Manchester City are back in action once again in the Premier League this evening as they prepare to travel to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United.

The Cityzens come into this match off the back of a 2-0 win over Leicester City at The Etihad last time out in the top-flight, thanks to goals from Jack Grealish and Omar Marmoush.

Pep Guardiola will still be without star striker Erling Haaland, due to an ankle injury, but the Spanish head coach knows that he can now rely on Marmoush to step up in that position.

Why Omar Marmoush has been a worthwhile signing for Man City

The Egypt international joined the club from Eintracht Frankfurt in the January transfer window and has hit the ground running in Manchester as a versatile forward, who can play out wide or through the middle as a striker.

He started as the centre-forward against Leicester and showed off his goalscoring instincts and technique to pounce on a mistake by Mads Hermansen and fire the ball in off the crossbar.

Marmoush

The 26-year-old sensation has now scored five goals and created three ‘big chances’ for his teammates in seven starts in the Premier League this year, which shows that he has provided an instant threat in the final third as both a scorer and a creator.

These statistics illustrate why he has been a worthwhile signing for City already, because he has made an impact right away and offered quality in front of goal in the absence of Haaland.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Guardiola must, now, unleash Kevin de Bruyne from the start – for his last Manchester derby before he leaves in the summer – to partner Marmoush in attack this evening.

Why Kevin de Bruyne should start against Man Utd

There is, of course, the sentimental angle in the sense that this will be his last chance to play in the derby before his contract expires at the end of the season, so it could be a good moment to bring him back into the XI to have one last dance with the Red Devils.

The Belgian whiz, who has scored three goals and provided six assists against Man Utd in his career, was an unused substitute in the win over Leicester, which could allow him to come into this game fresh and raring to go.

De Bruyne, as you can see in the clips above, has been a sensational creative force for the Cityzens over the years, with his ability to pick out sublime passes and crosses to assist his teammates.

The Belgium international, who Frank Lampard claimed “plays like a superstar”, has consistently created ‘big chances’ for his fellow attackers to find the back of the net throughout his Premier League career with the club.

As you can see in the table above, de Bruyne tends to create ‘big chances’ when he starts matches for City in the top-flight, which is why he should be unleashed this evening.

Jeremy Doku, who did not contribute to a goal or an assist last time out, could drop to the bench with Grealish moved out to the left, allowing the Belgian star to play centrally behind Marmoush.

Dream De Bruyne replacement: Man City competing to sign "world-class" star

Manchester City are facing “serious competition” from Premier League rivals as they seek to sign a “world-class” star to replace Kevin De Bruyne.

This would, hopefully, allow the Man City legend to provide the Egyptian star with the ‘big chances’ he needs to add to his growing collection of Premier League goals since his move to The Etihad in January.
