Johnson, Hardie and Short confirmed for T20I debuts against South Africa

Three new caps headline a brand-new Australia T20 XI under new captain Mitchell Marsh

Alex Malcolm29-Aug-20230:40

Head: Hope Johnson can be a match-winner like Starc for us

Australia have confirmed three debutants for the opening T20I against South Africa in Durban with Spencer Johnson, Aaron Hardie and Matt Short all set to play their first international match under new captain Mitchell Marsh.Australia named their XI for the first of three T20Is on Wednesday with Johnson, Hardie and Short headlining a completely new-look side to the last T20I side that played for Australia in the home T20 World Cup in October last year.David Warner, Cameron Green and Josh Hazlewood, who all played in Australia’s last T20I, are being rested ahead of the ODI series while Steven Smith, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Glenn Maxwell are all injured although Starc was dropped for the final match of last year’s World Cup.Related

Marsh excited to unfurl Johnson and Sangha in South Africa

Long-time T20 captain Aaron Finch has retired meaning Short will open the batting with Travis Head, having done so together briefly at Adelaide Strikers in the BBL last season where Short was named player of the tournament. Smith was set to open in the series before he was ruled out with a wrist injury that he suffered during the Ashes.Johnson is likely to take the new ball as he was named among a four-man attack featuring long-term Australia understudies Sean Abbott and Nathan Ellis with Adam Zampa playing as the lone spinner. Marsh said he had been “blown away” by Johnson’s ability in the brief times he had seen him bowl.”We are excited to see a young man make his debut for Australia,” Marsh added when speaking on Tuesday. “He is a super talent. He bowls mid to high 140s and swings the ball. My only message for him is to make sure he enjoys it.”Hardie is slated to bat at No. 7 although most of his recent success for Perth Scorchers has come at No. 3. He may get an opportunity at No.3 later in the series as Australia look to use the games to experiment with just under 12 months to go before next year’s T20 World Cup. He is one of four all-round options Marsh has to make up the overs of the fifth bowler alongside himself, Marcus Stoinis and Short who can bowl handy offspin and has experience bowling in the powerplay.Josh Inglis will bat at No. 4 and be the wicketkeeper after Matthew Wade was initially not selected for the tour although he has flown in as cover for Maxwell. Wade remains in the selection frame for next year’s World Cup given his outstanding body of work in T20 cricket over the last two years but the selectors saw this tour as an opportunity for Inglis to take the gloves and bat in the middle order given his prowess against spin ahead of a T20 World Cup in the Caribbean.Tanveer Sangha, Matt Short, Aaron Hardie and Spencer Johnson have all been called up for the South Africa tour•Getty Images

The debuts of Johnson and Hardie in particular are a precursor to Australia’s planning ahead of the ODI series and the 50-over World Cup starting in October. While the formats are different, Johnson and Hardie are also in Australia’s squad for the ODIs in South Africa ahead of the World Cup, with Short heading home after the T20Is.Australia have a long injury list at the moment with Cummins (wrist), Smith (wrist), Starc (groin) and Maxwell (ankle) all unavailable for the South Africa ODI series. All four are expected to be fit for the India series that starts on September 22 but coach Andrew McDonald told on Tuesday that Johnson and Hardie had an opportunity to stake a claim for a berth in Australia’s final ODI World Cup 15 should any of those players fail to recover.”I think we’re far from settled just with the injury room at the moment,” McDonald said. “The information on all of them is they will be right for the World Cup which is positive but you never know obviously when you’re coming off injury. If there was a reoccurrence then that could shift our thinking a little bit.”Is this an audition potentially for spaces that may open up, in South Africa? There’s no doubt about that. We feel as though we’ve got some exciting talent coming through. You look at Aaron Hardie in that allrounder space, getting his opportunity. Spencer Johnson as well, a left-arm fast bowler. We’ve got some new players coming through and we feel as though it’s the right time for that as well to blend that youth with experience.”If anything were to move or shift on us, we’ve got that information from South Africa. It’s remiss of me not to mention Tanveer Sangha in that spinning department. He’s a young exciting legspinner. If something were to happen to Adam Zampa we’re hoping to get some game time into him in South Africa.”McDonald added Maxwell’s latest setback with his leg was slightly worrying given he has experienced similar soreness with his previously broken leg on his international return in the ODI series in India back in March.”It’s concerning,” McDonald said. “And the reason why it’s concerning is it’s happened a couple of times. If you remember back to the three-match series against India he played in the first one and pulled up a bit lame from that and then coming into camp for this one has had another small setback. There’s no doubt on the back of what was a horrendous injury that he suffered there’s always going to be a balance between the load that he can take on and unfortunately, he’s had a small setback here but we’re confident that he’ll be right for the World Cup.”McDonald is not leaving for South Africa until Wednesday having taken some extra time at home with Assistant coach Michael Di Venuto taking charge of Australia’s side for the T20 series.Australia’s XI: Matt Short, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh (capt), Josh Inglis (wk), Marcus Stoinis, Tim David, Aaron Hardie, Sean Abbott, Nathan Ellis, Adam Zampa, Spencer Johnson

Finch: Australia's body language 'quite flat' at the moment

Watson, meanwhile, feels the side do not seem ‘desperate enough to really put it all on the line’

Moody: This Australian team is far from the previous champion sides

Former captain Aaron Finch has termed Australia as having looked “flat” in the field during their poor start to the World Cup which has brought heavy defeats against India and South Africa but could understand their reasoning behind the surprise decision to drop Alex Carey after just one game.Australia began with a six-wicket defeat against India, although they did reduce the hosts to 2 for 3 then dropped Virat Kohli early in his innings, before that was followed by an even more comprehensive loss to South Africa in Lucknow which included six missed chances of varying difficulty and being bowled out for 177.Related

Smith, Stoinis calls put spotlight on TV umpire in Australia-SA game

“The body language on the field is quite flat at the moment from Australia,” Finch, who was Australia’s white-ball captain less than a year ago, told ESPNcricinfo’s Match Day show. “Even with the ball, they are a bit standoffish, they are waiting for things to happen and that can become contagious among the group as well.”The last thing you want to do is start the tournament poorly because there’s no way to get yourself back into it. It’s been a tough start…two games where you say if we break even, win one lose one, we are okay with that, then it’s a bit of a softer run home compared especially with India first up.”The tone was set early on and it hasn’t recovered yet. They need a way to freshen up, mentally and physically, because it’s been a gruelling lead-up with five ODIs in South Africa, three T20s, come to India and play three ODIs then two warm-up matches when they only had 11 fit players. One-day cricket, physically, takes quite a bit out of you.”After the loss to India, Australia made two changes for the game against South Africa. The omission of Cameron Green in favour of Marcus Stoinis had been expected from a few days out, but the decision to replace Carey with Josh Inglis was greeted by widespread surprise when the team sheets dropped on Thursday.”Don’t think there’s any panic,” Finch said. “If you look at the stats, Alex Carey’s last 10 games, [there are] seven scores under 10. It just looks like he’s been a little bit frantic when he’s got the crease, there hasn’t been a real pattern to the way he’s gone about his innings.”Think going into the warm-up games they were still confident he could come good, then to miss out in the first game to [Ravindra] Jadeja, a decent ball around the wicket, but you should be able to keep that out at least. It’s a harsh selection, but there is some justification behind it.”Australia’s poor start to the tournament is turning the spotlight on current captain Pat Cummins, but Finch argued that some of the calls he’s had to make have been borderline and again turned the spotlight on the team’s broader presence in the field.”Australia haven’t bowled poorly,” Finch said. “Tactically, could Pat have stretched it a bit more in that first game and went Hazlewood one more and Starc one more, really tried to blow the partnership open of KL [Rahul] and Virat, that’s debatable. There’ll be some that say yes, some that no. I would probably have looked to do it because defending 200 you know the game isn’t going to go 50 overs.”The only difference I noticed in the field was the South African fielders were really tight in the ring…they were all hustling in. I know the batters felt a lot of pressure because they couldn’t get off strike. On the flip side, Australia has been very standoffish, they have been hanging back on the ring, and it just allowed South Africa’s new batters to get into their innings. Maybe that’s more a mindset change more than anything tactical.”Meanwhile, former Australia allrounder Shane Watson also questioned the team’s attitude in the field during their opening two matches.”The thing that stands out to me the most, really, is that it just doesn’t seem right now like the Aussie team is desperate enough to really put it all on the line,” Watson told ESPNcricinfo. “There’s moments when they are fully engaged with the game and desperate to have an impact, but there’s other times when they seem to be cruising through. In a World Cup, you cannot have periods of time where you’re cruising. Every individual needs to be fully engaged, every single ball, to try and make their mark on the game. It was just a bit too cruisy at times.”Australia have not been their best on the field in the ODI World Cup•Getty Images

Watson was more taken aback by the decision to axe Carey after just one match with the selectors having backed him throughout the lead-up along with what he produced at the 2019 World Cup in England where he averaged 62.50.”When I heard there were two changes, I was racking my brain: who would be that second change, after Stoinis coming in?” Watson said. “I wasn’t expecting Alex Carey to be dropped after one game of a World Cup. Yes, he’s had a lean run for a while, but having one game against India on a really challenging batting track, I thought that was really harsh.”Four years is a long time but, gosh, Alex Carey played incredibly well in the last World Cup when Australia were in some really bad situations with the bat. He came good. From that perspective, knowing that [Josh] Inglis hasn’t played a World Cup before and knowing how Alex Carey reacts in pressure situations – like we saw in the last World Cup – I was very surprised they didn’t stick with him for a bit longer. It was cut-throat.”But despite the poor start to the tournament, which has left Australia ninth after two games ahead of their clash against Sri Lanka in Lucknow on Monday, Finch retained belief in his former team-mates.”There’s so much quality in that side,” he said. “If they can just get away from the game for a day or so, recharge their own batteries physically and mentally, and find a way to forget about the game. When that happens you tend to be able to see the game a little bit from afar and remove yourself from the cauldron. You can get a bit of more of a balanced view on how you are going personally and what you change tactically, because technically it’s so hard to change anything on such short notice.”

Patterson powers Strikers past Renegades and to the top of the table

The 96-run stand between Jess Duffin and Harmanpreet Kaur went in vain for Renegades, who remain stuck at the bottom of the pile

Late hitting from Bridget Patterson powered defending champions Adelaide Strikers past struggling Melbourne Renegades at Karen Rolton Oval in their WBBL fixture on Wednesday.Despite a gulf between the teams on the ladder, Strikers were made to work and the target of 149 was not easy on a tricky surface. But Patterson was superb at the death, finishing unbeaten on 36 from 26 balls as Strikers claimed victory with an over to spare.Renegades’ total had been built around a 96-run fourth-wicket partnership between Harmanpreet Kaur and Jess Duffin after they had slumped at 41 for 3.After that, Renegades needed early wickets under lights, but were thwarted by aggressive opener Katie Mack in the powerplay. She used her feet to great effect against offspinner Hayley Mathews and capitalised on wayward short bowling from 16-year-old quick Sara Kennedy.Bowling at speeds close to 120kph, Kennedy has impressed in her debut season but struggled for rhythm, and conceded 15 runs in the third over amid Mack’s flier.Mack had the boundary in her sights on almost every delivery before holing out to Matthews after scoring 24.Captain Tahlia McGrath became the second Strikers batter to pass 2000 WBBL runs and was untroubled along with Laura Wolvaardt. They were in cruise control at the halfway mark before both fell after the drinks break to seamer Georgia Prestwidge.Danielle Gibson, the hero in their thrilling chase against Perth Scorchers, was set to again lead Strikers over the line before falling to Kennedy with 26 runs still needed. But Patterson calmly stepped up as Strikers moved back to the top of the ladder.Jess Duffin’s half-century helped Melbourne Renegades get to a competitive total•Getty Images

Renegades’ finals hopes, however, appear forlorn after losing their sixth straight game.Propping the ladder, Renegades were major underdogs but their only victory of the season had been against Strikers, who they had routed for 86 at the Junction Oval. After electing to bat on a lively surface, Renegades desperately needed Matthews to find form after she had scored just 99 runs from seven innings. She didn’t face up immediately with Tammy Beaumont smashing a first-ball boundary from offspinner Georgia Adams and added another lusty blow three balls later. But on the last ball of the over, when she finally went on strike, Matthews was cramped for room attempting a cut shot to be caught behind for a golden duck. It was the second time this season Matthews had fallen to Adams and the fourth time she has failed to reach double-figures.Renegades’ top-order woes continued when a frustrated Courtney Webb was stumped after being lured out of her crease by a looping delivery from legspinner Amanda-Jade Wellington that spun sharply off the pitch.Beaumont, who had been reprieved on 12 when legspinner Anesu Mushangwe dropped a tough return catch, was bowled by Gibson as Renegades stared down the barrel. In a familiar tale, the pressure was on Harmanpreet, who again dug Renegades out of trouble. She targeted Wellington down the ground and also played with trademark inventiveness, including several well-executed scoops, as she mastered the two-paced surface.Duffin provided strong support and after a slow start she overtook Harmanpreet with a slew of belligerent strokes. Both batters fell at the death with Harmanpreet brilliantly caught by McGrath low to her left at cover.Mushangwe deservedly picked up the wicket of Duffin to finish with 1 for 18 off four overs in a disciplined performance that the Renegades bowlers were unable to replicate later in the night.
