Tottenham Hotspur: Spurs ready to sell Moussa Sissoko – on one condition

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly ready to sell Moussa Sissoko if the right offer arrives in the summer.

That’s according to The Daily Star, as relayed by Ricky Sacks, who claim Tottenham could raise roughly £70m from a huge clear out that Spurs boss Jose Mourinho could reinvest back into the transfer market.

Mourinho is considering streamlining his squad to fund a summer spending spree, and Sissoko could find himself at the top of the shortlist, as he is considered surplus to requirements.

The Lilywhites look set to cash in on players like Serge Aurier and Danny Rose, while Juan Foyth may be on his way out the door, and the Frenchman could follow suit.

Daniel Levy will listen to bids in the region of £18m, despite the fact the 30-year-old has turned over a new leaf in north London.

The Spurs chairman bought the 62-cap French international from Newcastle United for £30m in 2016, pipping Everton to the post late on deadline day.

Although he struggled for consistency during his first couple of seasons, he has turned things around ever since, undergoing a transformation from an unreliable midfielder into an undroppable first team regular.

Sissoko signed a new three-year deal with the option of a one year extension until 2023, but he could find his chances limited, with former Southampton captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg set to become Mourinho’s first summer recruit in a matter of days.

The Frenchman has ably taken on the mantle of midfield enforcer, after he scored two goals and supplied one assist in the Premier League last term, made 1.3 tackles and averaged 1.2 clearances on average per game (via WhoScored).

However, Spurs may be tempted to cut their losses, as he isn’t getting any younger. While Sissoko has received a fair amount of stick for his inconsistent performances, he has been a loyal servant for the club, but could leave for pastures new in the summer.

Tottenham fans, do you think Levy should sell Sissoko? Let us know down below!

Newcastle fans loving what Steve Bruce has said about takeover

Whilst Newcastle’s proposed takeover has of course surrounded those higher up in the food chain at St James’ Park, that doesn’t mean to say the likes of the manager and players haven’t been affected by it.

And as per his comments ahead of the FA Cup clash against Manchester City, Magpies boss Steve Bruce has seemingly had enough of all the waiting around to see whether the Saudi consortium’s bid will finally be approved by the Premier League.

Think you’re a big Magpies fan? Can you name these former players by looking at their careers? Go on, give it a go…

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, he said (as quoted by The Daily Mirror): “Like all of us we are still waiting. I think all of us feel this decision has to be made. It just seems to have become tedious. It’s been going to be this week, it’s going to be due in days, it’s going to be in 48 hours. We need the people who are making the decisions to make that decision. We need them to make it. And be quick about it.”

And after hearing what Bruce had to say, Newcastle fans flooded to Twitter to share their reactions.

A few Newcastle fans lauded Bruce for speaking up and “saying it how it is”, with a couple of supporters in particular voicing their frustrations with the Premier League, labeling it as “disgraceful”.

One Magpies fan admitted that whilst he isn’t Bruce’s “biggest fan”, he appreciates the Newcastle boss’ outspoken comments and claimed it showed “he’s on side and has the fans’ interest”.

It’s fair to say Bruce is unimpressed with the amount of time it’s taking for the green light to be given for Newcastle’s takeover.

And it’s completely understandable too. Whilst this season is still yet to be finished, Bruce will be keen on looking ahead to the next campaign and making decisions on who to get rid of, and who to sign.

But with all this uncertainty hovering above the club, those kinds of important calls just cannot be made at the moment. It’s no surprise to see so many Magpies fans on board with what the manager had to say.

Tottenham Hotspur: Spurs set to sanction transfer for Kyle Walker-Peters

Southampton are ready to steal a march on their Premier League rivals by signing Kyle Walker-Peters from Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

Walker-Peters, 23, has made a huge impact at St Mary’s, playing in every single minute of Southampton’s last four games, helping the Saints beat Watford and Manchester City while drawing with Everton and Manchester United.

According to The Sun, as per @thespursweb, Tottenham are trying to flog Walker-Peters for £10m to raise some much-needed funds.

Ralph Hasenhuttl wants to wrap up a deal as quickly as possible, amid interest from several teams in the top flight.

Spurs are set to sanction a transfer for the youngster, as Jose Mourinho has ruled out any chances of the academy product returning to north London in the summer.

Walker-Peters didn’t do himself any favours after appearing to take a pot-shot at the Portuguese in an interview with the Saints’ official website.

The Lilywhites lack cover for Serge Aurier but Mourinho has decided to look elsewhere.

Daniel Levy has made it clear he will not be spending “rivers of money” in the summer, meaning Mourinho will mostly have to resort to sorting out swap deals, signing free agents and hunting for bargains in the transfer market.

Walker-Peters has been in sensational form for the Saints but finds the way back to his parent club shut.

The Portuguese has identified Southampton’s former captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg as his top priority this summer, and he could use the funds raised to cover some of the costs.

However, it is worth pointing out Hojbjerg won’t come cheap, as he will cost up to £35m, via The Times.

Liverpool fans tip Naby Keita for big things next season

Despite arriving in a big-money deal from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig, Naby Keita has struggled to make a genuine impression at Liverpool.

The Guinea international has played 51 times for the Reds, scoring just six times and providing only two assists, and this year has been a particularly difficult one.

Spot the fact from the fib: Are these Premier League records true or false?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

The midfielder has played just 18 matches across all competitions this season, with only nine of those coming in the Premier League – injuries playing a big part in stopping Jurgen Klopp from playing him more.

And Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to share their thoughts on the former Leipzig ace, and some of them have tipped him to eventually come good at Anfield.

One Liverpool fan even suggested that if his former teammate at Leipzig, Timo Werner, joined, then their link-up could be something to watch out for at Anfield.

At only 25, Keita still has plenty of time on his side to turn things around on Merseyside.

But with niggling injuries continuing to disrupt his ability to play in a consistent run of games, there will be major questions as to whether Klopp can continue to persist with him or whether they should just simply cut their losses.

Judging by the reaction of some of these Liverpool fans, Keita deserves a second chance.

The Chalkboard: Worrying trend suggests Silva cannot fix Everton’s big problem

[ad_pod ]

Everton were comfortably beaten by Wolves on Saturday in a truly shambolic showing from the Toffees, and one statistical trend shows Marco Silva may not have what it takes to turn it all around.

On the chalkboard

Everton fans were delighted when Silva arrived this summer, as after months of watching turgid football with no chances at either end of the pitch, they suddenly had a young manager eager to excite the fans with attacking football.

The boss hasn’t quite delivered on that promise yet though, despite the occasional glimpse of quality play.

What’s worse is his team have completely capitulated at the other end of the pitch, and not for the first time in his career.

Raul Jimenez’s header to put Wolves 2-1 up on Saturday was not only the easiest goal the Mexican international will ever score, it was also the 11th set piece goal Everton have conceded this season, the most in the league, and that continues a very worrying trend.

Pl>ymaker FC Exclusive: Jermaine Jenas reveals he would have snubbed Tottenham for Arsenal if they’d come knocking in 2005…

A worrying trend

Silva’s defensive deficiencies were the subject of much conversation in the summer, as plenty of pundits and fans felt hiring a manager who has yet to show he can organise a back four was a huge risk.

Those concerns have proved well and truly justified, and the underlying stats behind Silva’s set piece troubles beg the question if he even knows how to fix his mistakes.

Aforementioned, Everton are leading the way in set piece goals conceded this season, tied with West Ham on 11, but Whoscored’s stats show both of Silva’s last two English clubs suffered from the exact same problem.

Watford were second in the league for set piece goals conceded last season, letting 17 in, and Hull City led the way in the 2016-17 season, conceding a frankly ridiculous 21 goals from set plays.

It should be noted that Silva was only in charge for half of the respective seasons with Watford and Hull, but this must still be a huge worry for the Everton hierarchy.

Plenty of teams go through phases of struggling to defend set pieces, even Sean Dyche’s extremely physical Burnley side, but three consecutive years of the exact same problem suggests Silva has absolutely no clue how to cure the plague spreading through his ranks.

So, Everton fans, can Silva turn it around? Are you Silva in or Silva out? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…

Where next for Christian Pulisic? USMNT star's best possible landing spot

The Chelsea winger has come to a crossroad – GOAL takes a look at the 24-year-old's options heading into a career-defining summer

There's a pretty good chance that we've seen the last of Christian Pulisic in a Chelsea jersey. He may not admit it publicly, at least not yet, but there's a feeling that this summer is the right time for all involved to move on. Pulisic and Chelsea won a Champions League together, and one would hope that leaves a lasting legacy, but, given the dysfunction of this past season, both sides would benefit from moving on.

Pulisic, set to turn 25 in September, is no longer in the 'young player' category. He's still developing, for sure, but the U.S. men's national team star is at a point in his career where he needs to be playing regularly. That didn't happen this past season at Chelsea, where he managed just over 1,000 minutes under three different coaches while struggling with fitness and form.

Chelsea, meanwhile, need to clear up the squad, having signed just about every player under the sun over the last year. The club could certainly use some money, too, making Pulisic a prime candidate to move on.

So, that brings us to the summer, one full of juicy transfer rumors from all over the continent. Pulisic has been linked to just about every major club, but no clear-cut frontrunner has truly emerged for his services. It is believed that a fee between £20 and £40 million would get the job done, and reports have said that Pulisic is willing to take a pay cut to go to the right club.

But which club is the right club? GOAL breaks down Pulisic's options…

Getty ImagesNewcastle

Of the clubs in England, Newcastle felt like the most logical fit.

They're outside the big six, but now have big-six money. Pulisic, a Champions League winner, is seemingly the right kind of player for them to be signing as they look to steadily move into that elite tier in England.

However, according to the Athletic, Newcastle are no longer interested as they themselves prepare for a massive summer. They had previously enquired about taking Pulisic on loan, according to reports, but the club is now said to be moving on to other targets.

Which is a shame for Pulisic, really, as Newcastle would have seemingly represented the right kind of move for him to be making: not a step up, not a step down, but a step right back into the Champions League.

AdvertisementGettyManchester United

Manchester United have previously been linked to Pulisic, although it seems that interest has somewhat cooled.

In reality, the move would represent progress for Pulisic, who would leave a struggling Chelsea for a Manchester United team seemingly on the rise. With several key players at the club also facing uncertain futures, there's a path to more regular playing time at Old Trafford than there ever was at Stamford Bridge.

Man Utd, though, need a striker more than anything. The club is very much a No.9 away from competing at a higher level, and one would expect them to throw everything they have at that position. Their winger depth is also pretty solid, with Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Alejandro Garnacho with the club, and Facundo Pellistri and Amad Diallo on the way up.

Aside from a striker, there are other positions of need, with a midfielder, defender and goalkeeper all possibly coming in.

Chelsea may not be willing to sell to Man Utd either, which further complicates any potential move.

GettyFrance

Realistically, there's only one club in Ligue 1 that would likely be able to afford a move. And, while that club will need attackers this summer, no doubt, it doesn't seem that Pulisic really fits the bill.

PSG have already lost Lionel Messi this summer, and it looks like Kylian Mbappe could be close behind. That would leave PSG totally reeling in the attack, with only the oft-injured Neymar returning from their three-headed monster up top.

Should they sell Mbappe, PSG would have a massive transfer budget to work with, but is Pulisic really in the class of player they would look to attract? He has won a Champions League, of course, and that is the club PSG are so desperate to win, but is he the type of player that really gets them any closer, especially with Mbappe out the door?

PSG really may end up being the most interesting team of the summer, especially if Mbappe moves. Pulisic could, logically, be an answer at winger, but who knows what the leadership in Paris will cook up as they look to replace one or two superstars?

Getty ImagesGermany

While Pulisic's reputation has taken a bit of a hit in England, those in Germany will still remember him fondly. He was a hell of a player for Borussia Dortmund and Bundesliga fans have long had a better opinion of USMNT players than most of their European counterparts.

However, it's hard to see a landing spot in Germany for Pulisic, even with his good reputation there.

Bayern Munich are, of course, managed by Thomas Tuchel, and it's unlikely either party will be desperate for a third go-around together. Pulisic's 2022 book took a shot at Tuchel and the relationship never seemingly recovered. The two worked wonders together at some points and struggled to work together at others. That time has passed.

Dortmund, meanwhile, have plenty of depth in the attack. So much depth, in fact, that they've struggled to incorporate their own USMNT star, Gio Reyna. Plus, after selling Jude Bellingham this summer, they'll likely be looking to reinforce the midfield more than anything.

Can any other club in Germany afford Pulisic? Probably not. Perhaps RB Leipzig or Union Berlin could figure something out due to their status as Champions League participants, but Germany doesn't look like a real possibility at this point.

Exclusive: Andriy Shevchenko insists compatriot Mykhailo Mudryk won't be another Chelsea flop and reveals the one quality which makes Erling Haaland the most deadly striker in the world

The former Ukraine striker and Ballon d'Or winner discusses the tragic impact of the war in his country and football being an escape for youngsters

Andriy Shevchenko has just finished the interview but he wants to keep talking. “You have to keep talking about Ukraine,” he says. “When you go there, it breaks your heart.”

Shevchenko is looking down at a complex of football pitches where groups of teenagers are warming up for the day’s matches. They have flown from around the world to compete in the Global Finals in Istanbul, the final phase of a grassroots tournament for boys and girls aged 14 to 16.

After a meet and greet session with Shevchenko, the youngsters represent their country while competing for the trophy and for tickets to the UEFA Champions League final. Past winners of have gone on to build successful professional football careers, and some have even represented their country at major football tournaments.

Shevchenko is reminded of the youth football tournaments he played in Ukraine on the way to becoming a professional and winning major trophies in his home country, Italy and England as well as lifting the Champions League in 2003.

But organised sport in Ukraine has been brutally disrupted along with all semblance of normal life since the invasion by Russia last year. Shevchenko knows the power of football and how important it is for people to play and, just for a moment, to escape the horrors of war.

Getty'When you play football you forget about war'

“Inside Ukraine there's not much sport now. Sport plays such a big role and now, even more, because creating some sporting activities for the kids means a lot for parents and children,” Shevchenko tells GOAL

“When you play football you forget about war, you forget about the current situation and what's going on in Ukraine. That's the power of football and sport, to connect people, to give them inspiration and a different view of the future.”

Shevchenko’s belief in football’s power is why he has thrown his support behind the Global Finals.

“Football has such an important role in society, it's great to have such a big strong brand behind social stuff. I have known the programme for four or five years, there are so many teams coming through, the atmosphere is great, it's so fun,” he says.

“Also it's an opportunity to learn different cultures, sport has a very strong connection between children. The competition means a lot. When I was growing up I always loved football, I grew [as a player] thanks to some similar tournaments. I was growing up in Ukraine and we had a school tournament – I played for my school. This kind of opportunity was awesome, we could see potential players come out from these tournaments.”

AdvertisementGettyRebuilding a school with Zinchenko

Amid such bleak surroundings, role models play an even more important role in Ukraine and Shevchenko is proud that his country has two great ambassadors in Oleksandr Zinchenko and Mykhailo Mudryk.

Zinchenko has just helped inspire Arsenal to their best Premier League season since they last won the league in 2004. Although Mikel Arteta’s side were ultimately caught by Zinchenko’s former club Manchester City, the left-back proved an influential player on the pitch and in the Gunners’ dressing room.

The defender has been a fierce campaigner against Russia’s invasion and his tears during City’s match at Everton in the first game after troops invaded his country moved the football world.

Shevchenko and Zinchenko are helping to organise ‘Game 4 Ukraine’, a friendly match between Arsenal and Chelsea on August 4 at Stamford Bridge to raise money to rebuild a school in Chernihiv Oblast, northern Ukraine, which was damaged last year by Russian missiles.

“He does a lot for the country, he brings attention for Ukraine, he's been involved a lot in fundraising for different projects, we've been working together. We're going to rebuild a school in Ukraine,” Shevchenko says.

“It's an important school, it brings eight small villages together, there's only one school in the area. It's been hit by missiles, a couple of classes were destroyed. I was there with Oleksandr 10 days ago. It's terrifying.”

Getty Images'Chelsea believe in Mudryk'

Mudryk was close to joining forces with Zinchenko at Arsenal but Chelsea beat the Gunners to his signature and landed him for £89 million in January from Shakhtar Donetsk.

The transfer, which made Mudryk Ukraine’s most expensive player ever, led to £20 million being donated to the war effort. Mudryk has struggled to live up to his price tag so far, however, and is yet to score for his new club.

But Shevchenko is certain the 22-year-old will deliver in the long term for Chelsea, dismissing concerns he could become another big-money flop at Stamford Bridge. And he is looking forward to seeing how he develops under Mauricio Pochettino next season.

“He's very young, he has a lot of potential in the future. He's signed a very long contract with Chelsea, we should see how it's going at  the end of his contract with them," Shevchenko says.

"I think he has quality, a strong base. Chelsea look like they believe in him, there's a new manager now, we just have to give him time and wait. That is the policy and vision of the club."

GettyThe Ballon d'Or, Champions League finals and 326 goals

Shevchenko believes Mudryk and Zinchenko can inspire the youth of Ukraine and he knows the importance of role models, both to young aspiring footballers and to young people in general.

New global data reveals that over four in 10 parents believe that a lack of visible and relatable role models is a barrier to teens taking up and staying in sport. Shevchenko cites legendary former Ukrainian forward and manager Oleg Blokhin as his role model as he was one of the players who put Ukrainian football on the map and forged a path for future stars.

While at the tournament, Shevchenko holds up a shirt bearing Blokhin's name along with six young players wearing the name of their role models on the back of their shirts.

Shevchenko joined the youth academy of Dynamo Kyiv at the age of 10 and went on to become one of the club's greatest players, leading them to the semi-finals of the Champions League in 1998-99. He finished joint top-scorer in the competition that season with eight goals and then joined AC Milan.

It was in Milan where he turned into perhaps the most lethal striker in the world. He won the Ballon d’Or in 2004 after two superb seasons, scoring the final penalty in the shootout victory over Juventus in the 2003 Champions League final, then firing Milan to the Serie A title the following year. He also played for Chelsea before returning to Milan and then seeing out his career back with boyhood club Dynamo, signing off with 326 goals in 653 matches, fractionally shy of a goal every two games.

Pulisic has lift-off & please don't write off Mount: Chelsea winners, losers and ratings

The Blues had a comfortable afternoon against a lacklustre Wolves side – the perfect preparation for a crucial clash with Milan on Tuesday night.

Talk about domination. Chelsea swatted Wolves aside at Stamford Bridge as Graham Potter made it three wins on the bounce and ensured the Blues go into Tuesday's potentially decisive Champions League clash with AC Milan on a high note.

Wolves, to be fair, made it easy for their opponents as they backed off and allowed Chelsea to do what they liked in the game, with Potter even having the luxury of resting a few of his in-form players.

Dropped against Milan last week, Kai Havertz responded with the opening goal although it was a largely quiet afternoon for the Germany international.

That would've felt particularly good for Christian Pulisic, though.

The USMNT star has had a frustrating time of it over the last 12 months but, making just his second start of the 2022-23 campaign, scored his first goal since May as he demonstrated that he still has much to offer at Stamford Bridge.

To cap it all off, Armando Broja smashed home his first ever Chelsea goal. And what a goal it was.

Three points, top four. Bring on Milan.

Getty ImagesThe Winners

Christian Pulisic:

What a moment for Pulisic.

Frustrated for so long under Thomas Tuchel, he got his first start under Graham Potter and he made it count.

Yes, he wasted a couple of presentable opportunities in the first half in particular but you can forgive the rustiness, given his lack of game time.

His jinking run and composed finish added Chelsea's second goal at what was a crucial time and it was undoubtedly the highlight of the game.

That was his first goal for club or country since May and he'll be hoping he's now done enough to start in Milan for Tuesday night's pivotal Champions League showdown.

Cesar Azpilicueta:

Given Reece James's performance against AC Milan last time out, Chelsea fans could've been forgiven for raising an eyebrow or two at Azpilicueta's inclusion here.

Still, Potter's decision to rest the England international ahead of the trip to San Siro paid off as the Spaniard impressed over the 90 minutes, creating three chances in the first half that should have led to at least a goal.

He'll probably drop out of the XI on Tuesday night but Potter will know he can rely on his captain whenever he needs him – and he will need him again in what will be a gruelling 2022-23 campaign.

Mason Mount:

It's been a relatively subdued start to the 2022-23 season for Mount, having failed to find the net for the Blues thus far and seeing his place in Gareth Southgate's England team come into question.

He went some way to answering his critics against Wolves, however, as he claimed two assists and was generally one of Chelsea's best players.

His finishing was a little wayward but he created more chances (five) than any other player during his time on the pitch and his gorgeous assist for Kai Havertz's opener was a particular highlight.

Write him off at your peril.

AdvertisementThe Losers

Ruben Loftus-Cheek:

To be fair to Loftus-Cheek, he didn't do too much wrong, it's more that he didn't really impose himself on the game either.

Chelsea have a packed squad and are bulging with options in midfield, so any chance that Loftus-Cheek gets he's going to need to take it. He wasn't able to do so here.

Hakim Ziyech:

The outlook doesn't look good for Hakim Ziyech.

Brought on for the final four minutes of the win over Wolves, he's going to struggle to get in ahead of the likes of Mount and Gallagher.

It's just not worked out for the former Ajax midfielder in west London full stop, and it may well be that Potter looks to move him on before too long.

Denis Zakaria:

Things aren't looking great for Zakaria either. Thomas Tuchel signed the former Juventus midfielder in the summer before he was sacked by the club and Graham Potter doesn't seem too fussed about using him.

Indeed, Zakaria is yet to make an appearance for the Blues, and wasn't in the matchday squad for the Wolves game.

The 25-year-old has indicated he's going to fight for his place in the team but, and despite the fact we're only in October, he might need to have a word with his agent before too long.

Getty ImagesChelsea Ratings: Defence

Kepa Arrizabalaga (6/10):

A relatively quiet afternoon for Kepa. Pushed away Joao Moutinho's drilled free-kick in the first half but had a couple of nervy moments, with one in the second 45 seeing him flap at a cross. Still, a clean sheet and it's likely he'll keep his place ahead of Mendy.

Cesar Azpilicueta (8/10):

The Chelsea captain came in for Reece James and showed that he still has a part for play for the Blues with a solid afternoon's work. Created numerous chances in the first half as he continuously supported attacks. Unfortunate not to get an assist.

Trevoh Chalobah (6/10):

In from the start for only the second time in the 2022-23 campaign and had little to do as Chelsea dominated from start to finish.

Kalidou Koulibaly (6/10):

Occasionally wasteful in possession but marshalled the defence well and kept Diego Costa quiet on his return to Stamford Bridge.

Marc Cucurella (5/10):

Didn't get close enough to Adama at times as he allowed the Wolves winger to swing over a couple of dangerous crosses but improved defensively as the game went on. Crucial block to deny Podence just after the hour mark.

Midfield

Jorginho (6/10):

Kept Chelsea ticking over and almost scored in the first half as his low shot was kept out by Sa. Booked for a lunge on Matheus Nunez as Wolves countered.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek (5/10):

Didn't really take his chance to shine in what was his second start in a row. Smashed an effort over the bar in the first half when he should've done better and occasionally wasteful in possession. Hooked in the 66th minute and may now lose his place.

Conor Gallagher (7/10):

Was brought into the starting XI after his late heroics against Crystal Palace and certainly didn't let his manager down. Was full of running and did his fair share of tracking back to support Azpilicueta behind him. Almost put one straight onto Havertz's head early on in the second half, only for Sa to deny the German a tap-in. An impressive performance and he proved he can be relied upon.
